BNZ Breakers Tickets Cover Auckland Transit Access Sunday

Auckland Transport now lists bus and train travel as included in BNZ Breakers home-game tickets, starting with Sunday, September 20, 2026, when the club hosts the Illawarra Hawks at Spark Arena. The agency’s major-events page, last updated September 17, names the 5 p.m. tip-off at 42 Mahuhu Crescent in Parnell and states plainly that bus and train travel is included in the ticket.

The traveler move is simple: hold a valid home-game ticket or membership, ride AT buses and trains at no extra fare from two hours before doors open through the last scheduled service, and keep that ticket for the ride home. The same AT network is how visitors already reach the downtown ferry terminal for an Auckland to Waiheke ferry the next morning, so a game-night ride does not require a separate transit product.

At a Glance
  • Offer: AT buses and trains included with BNZ Breakers home-game tickets and memberships for all 14 home dates this NBL season.
  • First window: Sunday, September 20, 2026, Spark Arena, 5 p.m. tip-off, doors at 4 p.m.
  • Hours: Free travel from two hours before doors open through the end of that day’s public transport services.
  • How to ride: Show the game-day ticket to AT staff when boarding and keep it for the return trip.
  • Not included: Ferries, and any service that is not an AT bus or train.

Ticket Holders Ride AT Buses and Trains at No Extra Fare

Auckland Transport’s September 17 press release on Scoop says ticket holders and members ride AT buses and trains free with the game ticket. AT chief executive Stacey van der Putten framed it as a way to skip game-night traffic and parking. BNZ Breakers chief executive Troy Georgiu said the ticket now makes the trip more affordable for families across Auckland.

Times independently reported the same terms on September 16: the deal starts Sunday against the Hawks, covers all 14 home games, and requires fans to show the game-day ticket to AT staff when they board and again on the way home. That is a staff check, not a HOP promo code.

Keep the ticket until you leave the last vehicle. Free travel runs through the end of daily AT services, which matters more after a late finish than on the inbound trip.

Sunday’s Illawarra Hawks Tip-Off Starts the Window

Sunday is the first date that counts. The Breakers’ release lists 5 p.m. tip-off and 4 p.m. doors at Spark Arena, so the two-hour free window opens at 2 p.m. Walk about 12 minutes from Waitematā Station, or take an Innerlink bus that the club says drops you about two minutes from the venue.

AT still wants fans to check Journey Planner or the AT Mobile app and to allow extra time. Auckland City Rail Link service began September 13, and the club says that is why trains from south, east, and west Auckland now run more often into the city-centre stations that serve Spark Arena.

If you already hold Sunday tickets, the decision is which AT bus or train to board after 2 p.m. If you do not, included transit is part of the seat cost, not a separate pass sold at the station.

City Rail Link Paths Into Spark Arena

Waitematā Station remains the rail hub for Spark Arena. From south Auckland, the club says to ride the South City Line, which runs between Pukekohe and Newmarket via Waitematā. From east Auckland, ride the East West Line from Manukau Station to Waitematā. From west Auckland, the East West Line from Swanson Station also terminates the city-centre ride at Waitematā, or the Western Express 1 bus to Lower Albert Street leaves a 15-minute walk to the arena.

From the city centre, the release describes a pre-game stop around Te Waihorotiu or Karanga-a-Hape, then a short hop on either the East West or South City line to Waitematā. That is useful only if you are already downtown. It is not a reason to add an extra transfer if your home station already has a through train to Waitematā.

None of those routings include a ferry. The included travel is buses and trains. A Devonport or Waiheke passenger still pays the ferry fare, then uses the game ticket on the connecting bus or train once on the Auckland side, if that connection is an AT bus or train and falls inside the two-hour window.

Ferries and AirportLink Stay Outside the Deal

AT’s events page repeats that bus and train travel is included. It does not add ferries. AirportLink and other airport products are separate fares unless AT later posts a date-specific exception. Pay the ferry, then use the game ticket on a connecting AT bus or train inside the window.

The same AT page also lists included transit for the Warriors versus Knights NRL finals game at Eden Park on September 20. That does not extend a Breakers ticket to Eden Park, and it does not extend a Warriors ticket to Spark Arena. Each ticket covers travel to its own venue.

Non-AT coaches and ride-hail trips are self-paid. An official AT rail-replacement bus counts as a bus under the same show-your-ticket rule. Parking remaining open is the default; AT’s pitch is to skip it, not a car-park closure.

Later Home Dates Keep the Same Boarding Rule

AT and the Breakers both say the partnership covers all 14 home games this season, not a one-night trial. The events calendar currently spells out only the September 20 Hawks date with the included-travel line. For later home games, check that same AT events page and the club’s ticket confirmation before you travel, because door times and last-train times will shift with tip-off.

Members ride on the same terms as single-game buyers, according to both the AT and Breakers releases. A membership card is not a season-long flash-pass on random weekdays. It works on home-game days, from two hours before doors, on AT buses and trains, to and from Spark Arena. Away games, watch parties, and merchandise-only purchases are not in the posted offer.

If AT staff cannot see a valid ticket, pay the normal fare and keep the receipt. The posted benefit is a staff-checked inclusion, not a systemwide fare holiday. That is the conservative way to end the night if a reader or a gate is down and you still need to get home.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Hold Sunday Hawks tickets and can reach an AT train or bus after 2 p.m. Ride with the ticket from 2 p.m. through last service; walk about 12 minutes from Waitematā or take Innerlink to the door.
Hold a Breakers membership but not a Sunday seat The posted offer covers members on home-game days; confirm the specific home date on AT’s events page before you skip a fare.
Need a ferry, AirportLink, or a non-AT coach Pay that fare. Only AT buses and trains are included.
Are going to Eden Park on Sunday for the Warriors Use that event ticket’s own included transit. A Breakers ticket does not cover Eden Park.
Planning Impact

2 p.m. on Sunday, September 20, is the first free-ride gate. Doors are listed at 4 p.m. and tip-off at 5 p.m., so the two-hour window opens at 2 p.m. for inbound AT buses and trains.

Last scheduled AT service that night is the return gate. Keep the same ticket for the ride home; the posted offer runs to the end of daily services, not to a fixed clock time.

The remaining home games are the season gate. Recheck AT’s events page for each later Spark Arena date, because door times and last trains will move with the schedule.

Frequently Asked

Do BNZ Breakers tickets cover Auckland buses and trains on Sunday?

Yes. Auckland Transport lists bus and train travel as included for the September 20 Illawarra Hawks game at Spark Arena, and both AT and the club say the same inclusion runs for all 14 home games.

When does the free travel window open on September 20?

Two hours before doors. The club lists doors at 4 p.m. and tip-off at 5 p.m., so inbound AT buses and trains are covered from 2 p.m. through the last service that night.

Are ferries included with a Breakers ticket?

No. AT and the club limit the offer to AT buses and trains. Pay the ferry fare, then use the game ticket on a connecting AT bus or train inside the window.

Do I tap on with an AT HOP card?

Show the game-day ticket to AT staff when boarding and keep it for the ride home. The posted rule is a staff check, not a HOP discount code.
