An Assateague over sand vehicle permit costs the same in October as it does in June, runs for a year either way, and from October 1 buys three fewer hours of beach a day. That is the arithmetic worth doing before you pay for one this autumn.
The seashore’s hours page sets the over sand zone at 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. from May through September, then 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. for October, then 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November through December. The permit price does not move with them.
- October 1: OSV hours drop from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. down to 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- November 1: they drop again, to 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Permit: 110 to 200 dollars, valid a year from the month of purchase.
- Watch out: the sticker is non refundable and cannot move to another vehicle.
Which Three Hours You Lose
The cut is not evenly spread. October takes an hour off the front of the day and two off the back, which removes the first hour of light and the last two hours of evening on a beach where the fishing and the quiet are both concentrated at the edges.
November takes another two from the evening. By December the zone is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., four hours shorter than a June day, and on a coast where sunset is before five that is the practical end of after work access.
The Permit Runs on a Different Clock
An OSV permit is valid for a year from the month of purchase, not for a calendar year or a season. Buy in October and the permit’s best months are its last ones, eleven months away, which is the opposite of how most people assume an annual pass works.
The fee ranges from 110 to 200 dollars depending on the type of access, and permits are sold only through Recreation.gov. They must be picked up by the registered vehicle owner within 10 days of purchase.
The Sticker Is Attached to One Vehicle
This is the condition that catches people out. The permit is a sticker, permanently affixed inside the windscreen in a lower corner, issued to the registered owner of one named vehicle, and it may not be transferred to another.
It is also not refundable and not replaceable if lost. If the vehicle is sold or written off, a replacement of the same type and expiry is possible, but only by giving park staff enough of the original sticker to work with. A copy of the application or the purchase receipt is explicitly not enough.
Where the Rest of the Seashore Sits
Vehicles are confined to established roads, parking areas and the designated OSV routes, so the permit buys one specific thing rather than general beach driving. The seashore itself is open year round, 24 hours a day, which is why the OSV hours read as a restriction rather than a closure.
Staffed facilities keep their own clocks. The visitor centre runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the ranger station 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., both closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the ranger station is where campground registration, backcountry permits and OSV permits are actually handled.
Buying at the Right Moment
If the trip is a one off autumn weekend, the annual permit is a poor instrument: you pay the full fee for the shortest days of the year and the clock starts immediately. If you expect to return in spring and summer, buying now front loads the cost against the months that matter least.
The better arithmetic is to buy in the month before you will use it most. For a beach whose best driving hours are May to September, that argues for a spring purchase rather than an autumn one, and our guide to Assateague Island National Seashore covers the bases either way.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Are driving the beach in October | Plan for 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The dawn hour and the last two evening hours are gone. |
| Are coming in November or December | 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. On this coast that is effectively daylight only. |
| Are buying a permit now | Remember it runs a year from the month of purchase, so the good months come last. |
| Are borrowing or changing vehicles | The sticker is tied to one registered owner and vehicle and cannot be transferred. |
| Only want one autumn weekend | Price the annual permit against a single trip before committing. It is not refundable. |
The price is flat and the access is not. October buys three fewer hours a day for the same fee.
The permit year starts when you pay. An autumn purchase spends its best months furthest away.
One vehicle, one owner, no refunds. The sticker is the least flexible part of the arrangement.
