Aspen Airport Closes April to November 2027 for Runway Rebuild

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport will close Sunday, April 4, 2027, at 11:00 p.m. through Friday, November 19, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. for a full runway rebuild and the start of a new commercial terminal project.

Travelers booking Aspen for spring through mid-fall 2027 need an alternate airport plan now, not after fares harden.

The airport’s official modernization notice makes the traveler rule blunt: no commercial or general aviation operations and no terminal access while the airfield is closed. Winter 2026 to early April 2027 remains open under the published schedule, which is why the next two booking seasons matter more than usual.

What the official closure schedule locks in

According to Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, the 2027 shutdown supports voter-approved modernization focused on safety, access, efficiency, and long-term reliability. Airport Director Diane Jackson framed the project as a long-term investment that still requires coordination with federal partners, airlines, general aviation operators, and the community.

The runway rebuild is the hard operational driver. Officials say the existing runway will be fully reconstructed to meet current Federal Aviation Administration standards, which is why commercial and general aviation both stop rather than operating around partial work.

A new commercial passenger terminal and Fixed Base Operator facility also begin construction in April 2027. When the rebuilt runway reopens in late 2027, commercial flights are expected to use the existing terminal until the new terminal is completed in 2029.

That sequence creates two traveler clocks. First is the airfield blackout from April through mid-November 2027.

Second is a longer terminal transition that can change curb, security, and gate habits even after flights resume.

Spring, summer, and early fall 2027 are different. With ASE closed, Aspen-bound travelers will need Eagle County, Denver International, or another regional door plus ground transport into the Roaring Fork Valley.
