America the Beautiful Senior Pass Costs 80 Dollars for Life

At 62, the most valuable thing in American travel costs 80 dollars once. The Senior Lifetime Pass covers entrance to national parks and other federal sites for the rest of your life.

The National Park Service states that US citizens and permanent residents aged 62 and older can buy an America the Beautiful Senior Annual Pass for 20 dollars or a lifetime version for 80 dollars. A single visit to a park such as Saguaro costs 15 to 25 dollars at the gate, so the lifetime pass pays for itself within a handful of trips.

At a Glance
  • 80 dollars: the Senior Lifetime Pass, bought once.
  • 20 dollars: the Senior Annual Pass, renewed each year.
  • Age 62: the minimum, for US citizens and permanent residents.
  • Up to 3 weeks: how long online orders can take to arrive.

Annual or Lifetime: The Four Year Rule

The arithmetic is short. Four years of the 20 dollar annual pass equals the 80 dollar lifetime pass, so anyone expecting to keep visiting federal sites beyond four years should buy the lifetime version.

The annual pass makes sense only when the budget this year is the constraint, or when travel beyond a few years is genuinely unlikely.

What the Pass Discounts Beyond Entry

The Senior Pass may provide a 50 percent discount on some amenity fees, which the park service lists as camping, swimming, boat launch and specialized interpretive services. That camping discount is where long trips see the biggest saving.

The limits matter too. The pass generally does not cover or reduce special recreation permit fees or fees charged by concessioners, so lodge rooms, guided tours run by private operators and permit lotteries are unaffected.

Who It Covers in the Car

The federal pass store explains the coverage rule: at sites that charge per vehicle, the pass covers the pass owner and all occupants of a personal vehicle, and at sites that charge per person it covers the owner and up to three additional adults aged 16 and over.

So a senior driving with family can bring the whole car in on one pass at a per vehicle park.

At a per person site the limit is the owner plus three adults, so a larger group on foot or in two vehicles will need more than one pass. Children under 16 are not counted against that limit in the store’s wording, which refers to adults aged 16 and over.

Buying It Without the Wait

Applicants must provide documentation of age and residency or citizenship, and the pass cannot be bought as a gift because the holder has to prove eligibility.

Online orders through the USGS store may take up to three weeks to be processed and delivered. The park service’s own advice is to buy at a purchase location on arrival to avoid the wait, which is the better choice for anyone travelling soon.

Old Golden Age Passports Can Be Swapped Free

Golden Age and Golden Access Passports are no longer sold but are still honoured. The park service encourages holders to exchange them for a current Senior Lifetime Pass for free, in person at sites that issue passes, bringing the old pass and photo identification.

The remaining 2026 free entrance days, October 27 and November 11, apply to US citizens and residents as well. For park ideas, our Everglades National Park guide covers a park whose camping fees the senior discount applies to.
