Alien Swirling Saucers gets a new soundtrack on Friday 25 September, and the useful thing to know before anyone rearranges a Hollywood Studios morning around it is how little of the ride is actually changing. The music changes. The ride does not, Disney said in its own announcement.
The overlay is called Lilypad’s Jams, and it arrives two days after the film it comes from. Our Toy Story Land guide covers the land itself; this is what the change does to a visit.
- Debuts: Friday 25 September 2026, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
- What changes: the soundtrack, rebranded Lilypad’s Jams, plus off ride entertainment.
- What does not: the ride vehicles, the layout and the ride experience itself.
- Tie in: Lilypad is a character from Toy Story 5, which streams on Disney+ from 23 September.
- End date: none published.
What Actually Changes, and What Does Not
Disney’s announcement is unusually specific about the boundary, which makes this easier to plan around than most overlays.
The soundtrack is the change. The new playlist mixes reimagined classic Toy Story songs with brand new compositions, and it crosses genres deliberately, taking in pop, country, electronic dance and alternative rock rather than staying in one lane.
The second change is outside the ride. Lilypad appears in off ride entertainment as a DJ, introducing tracks, running interactive activities and showing character videos in the queue area and the land around it.
Everything else stays. The vehicles are the same, the layout is the same, the ride cycle is the same. A guest who has ridden Alien Swirling Saucers before will recognise every part of it except what is coming out of the speakers.
That matters because overlay announcements often read as bigger than they are. This one is a soundtrack and a character presence, not a rebuild, and Disney has not described it as anything more.
Independent coverage reached the same reading. WDW News Today reported the change as new music rather than a reworked attraction, which is the same boundary Disney drew.
Meet Lilypad, the Tablet Frog With a Playlist
Lilypad is a frog shaped smart tablet from Toy Story 5, a character built around the idea of connecting friends through technology, which is why a music takeover is the obvious park expression of her.
The Imagineers involved have been open about the tone they were reaching for. “We wanted to think about the music in a completely new way,” said Thomas Niederhiser, a senior creative producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, describing songs that are “sincere and a little cheesy.”
Geoff Line, a senior story lead at Walt Disney Imagineering, framed the collaboration itself: “Collaborating with our partners at Pixar,” he said, “is just pure joy.”
The sincere and a little cheesy line is worth holding onto, because it sets expectations better than any track listing would. This is not a remix album aimed at adults standing in a queue. It is written for the ride it plays on.
The genre spread points the same way. Pop, country, electronic dance and alternative rock in one playlist is not a coherent musical statement; it is a set built so that a two minute ride cycle sounds different depending on when you board.
Two Dates, Two Days Apart
The scheduling is the part most guests will get wrong, and it is easy to get right.
Toy Story 5 streams on Disney+ from Wednesday 23 September. Lilypad’s Jams starts at the attraction on Friday 25 September. Two days separate them, which is deliberate rather than incidental.
For a family already in Orlando that week, the practical version is simple. The character will be new to anyone who has not watched, and the overlay does not explain her. Watching first is the difference between recognising a DJ and meeting a stranger in a queue.
For anyone visiting later in the autumn, the order does not matter. The film will still be there, and Disney has published no end date for the overlay.
There is a smaller scheduling point underneath it. A Friday debut puts the first day of the overlay on a weekend, which is when Toy Story Land runs its longest queues, so the quietest way to hear it new is a weekday the following week rather than opening day.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Are visiting before 25 September | You get the existing soundtrack. Nothing about the ride itself changes on that date, so do not move the visit for it. |
| Are visiting that week with children | Toy Story 5 lands on Disney+ on 23 September. Watching first is what makes Lilypad register. |
| Skipped the ride before | The ride experience is unchanged, so a previous decision to skip it still holds on ride mechanics alone. |
| Want the off ride part | The DJ set, activities and character videos sit outside the attraction, so they can be seen without queueing. |
| Are planning past autumn | No end date has been published, so treat it as open ended rather than as a limited run. |
An Overlay Is Not a Refurbishment
The distinction has a practical edge at Hollywood Studios in particular, where several attractions are in genuine physical work this year.
A refurbishment closes a ride, moves a queue or wraps a building. An overlay of this kind changes the content while the attraction keeps operating, which means no closure notice, no downtime and no change to the park’s ride count on the day.
Toy Story Land itself is unaffected. Slinky Dog Dash and Toy Story Mania keep their own programming, and nothing in the announcement describes a change to either.
The contrast is visible from the same park on the same day. Sunset Boulevard has had scaffolding on the Hollywood Tower Hotel facade since July while that ride kept running, which is what physical work looks like. Toy Story Land shows none of it.
Deep Arrival covered a separate operational change at this attraction earlier this year, when assigned rocket loading arrived at Alien Swirling Saucers. That was a queue and boarding change. This is not one, and the two should not be read together.
What Has Not Been Published
No track listing has been released. Disney has named the genres and the approach but not the songs, so what a guest actually hears on 25 September is not yet on the record.
No end date is published either. The announcement describes a debut without a run length, which is different from a seasonal overlay with stated dates and should not be planned as if it were one.
The off ride schedule is also unpublished. Lilypad is described as appearing as a DJ, but no set times, locations or frequency are given, so there is no way to plan a day around catching her specifically.
Nor has Disney said whether the overlay reaches any other park. Everything announced applies to Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World, and nothing in it mentions Disneyland or the international resorts.
Whether the existing soundtrack returns afterwards is also unstated. An overlay with no end date and no stated reversion leaves both outcomes open, and Disney has committed to neither.
The ride is unchanged. Vehicles, layout and cycle all stay the same, so this is a reason to re ride, not a reason to reschedule.
Watch first if you can. Toy Story 5 reaches Disney+ two days before the overlay starts, and Lilypad is not explained at the attraction.
Treat it as open ended. No end date has been published, so there is no deadline to plan against.
