Alaska Railroad Ends Daily Denali Star Runs After Sept 17

An Alaska Railroad passenger train in blue and gold livery standing at the Denali National Park depot platform, its dome cars stretching back along the track with forested mountains behind.

Alaska’s passenger rail network changes gear this week, and the change is larger than a timetable tweak. The Alaska Railroad’s published 2026 schedule runs the Denali Star from May 13 to September 17, with that final day southbound only.

Two days later the Aurora Winter Train takes over the same Anchorage to Fairbanks corridor at one train north on Saturday and one south on Sunday. A daily railway becomes a weekly one on a single weekend.

At a Glance
  • September 17: last Denali Star, southbound only from Fairbanks.
  • September 19: Aurora Winter Train starts, Saturdays north and Sundays south to May 9, 2027.
  • October 1: the Hurricane Turn returns as a first Thursday of the month flagstop.
  • Already finished: the Coastal Classic to Seward and the Glacier Discovery ended September 13 and 14.

September 17 Is the Last Denali Star

The Denali Star is the train most visitors mean when they say they took the train in Alaska. It leaves Anchorage at 8:20 a.m., reaches Denali at 3:40 p.m. and Fairbanks at 8 p.m., and it has run daily since mid May.

September 17 is its last day of 2026 and it operates southbound only, Fairbanks to Anchorage. Anyone holding a northbound plan for that date does not have a train. The Coastal Classic between Anchorage and Seward already finished on September 13, and the Glacier Discovery ran its full Grandview route for the last time on September 14.

One Train a Week, Not One a Day

From September 19 the Aurora Winter Train is the service. It runs northbound on Saturdays and southbound on Sundays through May 9, 2027, over the same route, leaving Anchorage at 8:30 a.m. and arriving in Fairbanks at 8 p.m.

The practical consequence is scheduling, not comfort. Miss a Saturday northbound and the next one is seven days away, so a winter rail trip is built around two fixed days rather than slotted into any itinerary. February and March 2027 add midweek runs, but between now and then the weekend pair is the whole timetable.

The Flagstop Train Changes Shape Too

The Hurricane Turn, the flagstop service that still lets passengers wave down a train in roadless country, ran Thursday to Monday out of Talkeetna through September 13.

It returns on October 1 in a different form: once a month, on the first Thursday, running all the way from Anchorage rather than Talkeetna, out at 8:30 a.m. and back at 8 p.m. There is no service in March. That is twelve or so operating days across the whole winter.

Why This Matters for Denali Trips

The railway is not a scenic extra at Denali, it is an access route. The National Park Service notes that the state owned railroad runs directly through the park entrance, with the depot a five minute walk from the Denali Visitor Center.

So a late season Denali itinerary that assumed a train has to be rechecked against the weekly pattern, and against the fact that the park’s own bus services have already wound down for the year. If the train no longer fits, our guide to where to stay near Denali and the comparison of the closest airports to the park cover the two alternatives.

A Dining Car and Eight Flagstops

The Aurora Winter Train is a full service train rather than a stripped one: dining car, baggage service at Anchorage and Fairbanks, non smoking cars, and wheelchair access at Anchorage, Wasilla, Talkeetna and Fairbanks.

It also keeps the flagstop character on the middle section, calling at Chase, Curry, Sherman, Gold Creek, Canyon, Twin Bridges, Chulitna and Hurricane, where times vary by the nature of the service. The Alaska Railroad operates year round; what changes is how often.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Booked a Denali Star after September 17 There is no such train. Rebook onto the Aurora Winter Train or drive.
Want Anchorage to Fairbanks by rail Saturdays northbound, Sundays southbound, from September 19 to May 9, 2027.
Are planning around Denali The depot is a five minute walk from the visitor center, but only one train a week reaches it.
Want the Hurricane Turn flagstop From October 1 it runs once a month on the first Thursday from Anchorage. No March service.
Wanted Seward or Grandview Both ended, September 13 and 14. Those routes return in May.
Planning Impact

The frequency is the story. Daily to weekly on one weekend is a bigger change than any timetable minute.

September 17 is southbound only. A northbound plan for the last day of the season is not a plan.

Winter rail is a two day grid. Saturdays and Sundays decide the shape of the whole trip.
