Phoenix drivers who need Loop 101, Loop 202, State Route 51, or State Route 347 this weekend should rebuild routes now. The Arizona Department of Transportation has posted multi-night closures and lane cuts from Friday night through early Monday.
ADOT’s Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for August 21 to 24 lists an eastbound Loop 101 Agua Fria shutdown, a westbound Loop 202 Santan shutdown, southbound SR 51 narrowing, a Tempe-Mesa ramp outage, and SR 347 one-lane paving north of Maricopa.
This is a new weekend package, not a refresh of Deep Arrival’s earlier July Phoenix freeway posts. The segments, directions, and ramp list are different enough that last month’s map will send you into closed barrels.

What ADOT locked for August 21 to 24
The August 20 advisory is the primary traveler document. It names the corridors, the Friday start clocks, the Monday reopen target, and the detour roads ADOT wants drivers to use first.

Northwest Valley: eastbound Loop 101 Agua Fria
Eastbound Loop 101 closes between 51st Avenue and Interstate 17 from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for widening. On-ramps at 75th, 67th, and 59th avenues also close, along with the eastbound Texas U-Turn near Union Hills Drive.
ADOT points drivers to eastbound Bell Road or Union Hills Drive as the primary surface workarounds. Do not assume a late Friday flight pickup near I-17 can still use eastbound Loop 101 after 10 p.m.
Northwest Valley hotel and RV guests should treat this as a full barrier in the eastbound direction, not a single-lane squeeze. Build the detour into Saturday morning theme-park or airport timing before the return window.
If you are meeting arriving passengers at Sky Harbor from the Northwest Valley, leave earlier than a normal Friday night plan. The I-17 interface becomes the choke point once eastbound Loop 101 is dark.
Southeast Valley: westbound Loop 202 Santan
Westbound Loop 202 closes between Lindsay and McQueen roads from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for widening. On-ramps at Williams Field Road, SanTan Village Parkway, and Val Vista Drive also close.
ADOT lists westbound Williams Field, Pecos, or Germann roads as surface options. Westbound US 60 Superstition Freeway is the alternate freeway route.

Guests staying near Chandler, Gilbert, or Queen Creek who normally cut across westbound Loop 202 after dinner should pick the surface grid before 10 p.m. Friday. A late show or late park exit is exactly when the Santan barrels go up.
Central Phoenix and Tempe-Mesa ramp cuts
Southbound SR 51 narrows to two lanes between Bethany Home and Indian School roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. The southbound Highland Avenue on-ramp and Indian School Road off-ramp close.
ADOT also reminds drivers that northbound SR 51 remains narrowed to two left lanes around the clock near Camelback Road. Southbound and northbound I-17 are the published freeway alternatives into and out of downtown.
Separately, the northbound Loop 101 Price Freeway ramp to westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway in the Tempe-Mesa area closes from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement work. ADOT suggests westbound McKellips Road to southbound McClintock Drive to reconnect with westbound Loop 202.
That ramp outage matters for ASU-area hotels, Mesa airport shuttles, and anyone hopping between Tempe and the East Valley overnight. Write the McKellips to McClintock sequence into your navigation before you leave the lot.
SR 347 near Maricopa and how to recheck live
SR 347 narrows to one lane in both directions between Casa Blanca Road and Mammoth Way, also called Cement Plant Road, north of Maricopa from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for paving. Expect merge slowdowns rather than a full stop.
Restriction schedules can change for weather or other factors. Treat the advisory as the baseline and recheck AZ511.gov, the az511 app, or 511 before you lock a flight pickup or hotel check-in time.
