What ends on October 25 is the 6 dollar vehicle reservation, not access to the mountain. Acadia National Park requires a reservation to drive the Cadillac Summit Road from May 20 through Sunday, October 25, and after that date the road needs none.
The Park Loop Road that feeds it stays open until December 1, which leaves 37 days when the highest point on the North Atlantic coast can be driven on a whim. Bar Harbor stays useful through most of it, and our Bar Harbor eating guide covers what is open around an early start.
- Reservation required through: Sunday, October 25, at 6 dollars per vehicle.
- Free of reservations: October 26 through December 1, when the Park Loop Road closes.
- Sunrise window right now: 5 a.m. to 6:30 a.m., moving to 5:30 a.m. on October 1 and 6 a.m. on October 16.
- Still needed either way: a park entrance pass displayed through the windshield.
The Sunrise Window Moves Twice in October
The sunrise reservation is not a fixed hour. Through September the window runs 5 a.m. to 6:30 a.m., then shifts to 5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. for October 1 to 15, and again to 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. for October 16 to 25.
That drift tracks the sunrise itself, so a reservation bought in August under one assumption will not match an October arrival. Check the window for your date rather than the one you remember.
Daytime Hours Shrink on the Same Schedule
The daytime reservation follows the same pattern in reverse, closing earlier as the season advances. It runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through September 15, then 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., then 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the first half of October.
The final phase, October 16 to 25, is 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. That is a two and a half hour shorter day than midsummer, and it is the one most likely to catch a visitor planning a late afternoon drive up for the light.
Six Dollars, Non Refundable, Plus the Entrance Pass
The fee is 6 dollars per vehicle rather than per person, which makes it cheap for a full car and irritating for a solo driver. Recreation.gov states it is non-refundable under all circumstances unless you cancel at least 48 hours before your start time.
That covers weather. Fog, cloud, wind and rain do not earn a refund, and neither does an emergency road closure or a missed slot. On a summit famous for being socked in at dawn, the 48 hour rule is the only protection you have.
How the Two Release Waves Work
Thirty percent of both sunrise and daytime reservations go on sale at 10 a.m. Eastern, 90 days before the date. The remaining 70 percent are held back and released at 10 a.m. Eastern exactly two days out.
The practical effect is that missing the 90 day drop is not fatal. For a late October sunrise the larger pool is the one that opens two mornings before, which is also when the forecast is finally worth reading.
Thirty Seven Days With No Reservation at All
From October 26 the requirement simply stops. The park’s own operating calendar keeps the Park Loop Road open until December 1, so late autumn is the one stretch when the summit is a decision you can make at 4 a.m. rather than 90 days out.
Two cautions. The park publishes a December 1 date for the Park Loop Road rather than a separate closing date for the summit road, and early snow closes mountain roads in Maine without asking, so treat the window as weather dependent.
What Else Closes Before Then
The park thins out around the same time. Blackwoods Campground closes at 10 a.m. on October 19, and the Hulls Cove Visitor Center closes on October 31, which removes the obvious place to ask a ranger about conditions.
There is also no Island Explorer bus service on the Cadillac Summit Road in any season. The summit has always been a drive or a hike, which is exactly why the reservation exists and why its absence changes the trip.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Want a Cadillac sunrise before October 25 | Book a sunrise reservation for your exact date and read the window, which moves on October 1 and again on October 16. |
| Missed the 90 day release | Set an alarm for 10 a.m. Eastern two days before your date. That wave holds 70 percent of the slots. |
| Are visiting between October 26 and December 1 | Book nothing. No vehicle reservation is required, though you still need an entrance pass. |
| Are worried about fog on your booked morning | Cancel at least 48 hours ahead or accept the loss. Weather earns no refund. |
| Are planning other Acadia hiking this autumn | Check current trail work, including the Beech Mountain Loop closure, before you build a day around one route. |
October 16 is the last window change. Sunrise moves to 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. and daytime to 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for the final ten days.
October 25 is the last reserved day. After it the summit road is first come, first served for as long as the road stays open.
December 1 is the real end. That is when the Park Loop Road closes, and the free window closes with it.
When do Cadillac Summit Road reservations end?
After Sunday, October 25, 2026. The requirement runs from May 20 and does not apply once the season closes.
Can I drive up without a reservation after that?
Yes, until the Park Loop Road closes on December 1, subject to weather. You still need a park entrance pass displayed in the windshield.
How much is a reservation and is it refundable?
Six dollars per vehicle. It is non-refundable under all circumstances, including weather and missed slots, unless cancelled at least 48 hours before the start time.
When are reservations released?
Thirty percent at 10 a.m. Eastern 90 days ahead, and the other 70 percent at 10 a.m. Eastern two days ahead of the date.
What time is the sunrise window in October?
5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. from October 1 to 15, then 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. from October 16 to 25.
Is there a bus to the summit?
No. The park states there is no Island Explorer service on the Cadillac Summit Road, so the summit is reached by car or on foot.
