Amalfi Coast base chooser
Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast
Positano is the iconic but steep choice, Amalfi is the central service and ferry base, and Praiano splits the two. Ravello suits views and a quieter hill town, Minori and Maiori make beach time simpler, while Salerno is the rail and ferry gateway rather than a coast village stay.

Getting around
How an Amalfi Coast base changes the trip
The coastal road, buses, and seasonal ferry services make each base a different tradeoff. Confirm current operator schedules and road conditions instead of relying on fixed timings.
If you stay in Positano
Positano delivers the famous coast setting but the vertical layout changes every arrival and outing. Verify the hotel approach and current water or road transport before committing.
If you stay in Amalfi
Amalfi is the practical middle choice when several coast towns are on the plan. Its strength depends on current ferry and bus operations, which should be rechecked close to the trip.
If you stay in Praiano
Praiano is an intentional compromise between the headline towns, not a short walk from either. Check the exact property access, bus stop, and current ferry options before booking.
If you stay in Ravello
Ravello is best treated as a hill-town stay with coastal excursions, not as a waterfront base. Its setting is the reason to choose it, and its elevation is the reason to reject it.
If you stay in Minori and Maiori
These neighboring towns exchange some iconic drama for more beach and town space. They work best when the trip has room for slower coast days rather than constant cross-coast movement.
If you stay in Salerno
Salerno is a logistics-first alternative when the itinerary combines rail travel with coast day trips. It is not the same experience as sleeping in Amalfi or Positano, which is exactly why the choice should be explicit.
