Redwood park gateway base chooser
Where to Stay Near Redwood National Park
Redwood National and State Parks follow a long north-to-south corridor rather than one entrance. Crescent City and Hiouchi favor Jedediah Smith, Klamath and Requa sit near the middle, Orick serves Prairie Creek and the southern national park, and Trinidad, Arcata, and Eureka add progressively more town services while increasing the drive to northern units.

Where should you stay? Start with the trip.
The parks span roughly 50 miles between Crescent City and Orick, and conventional hotels and lodges are outside the park boundary. Choose the park section first, then decide how much restaurant choice, airport access, and driving time the lodging base should trade for proximity.

Getting around
How a Redwood gateway changes the day
US 101 is the main north-to-south corridor, while park roads branch toward groves, beaches, rivers, and visitor centers. Local transit connects several communities, but a vehicle remains the practical choice for trailheads and scenic roads.
If you stay in Crescent City and Hiouchi
Crescent City and Hiouchi are the strongest bases for Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and the northern road network. They reduce northern mileage but create longer days when Prairie Creek and Orick are the main targets.
If you stay in Klamath and Requa
Klamath and Requa sit between the northern and southern park sections and line up well with Coastal Drive. The central position is useful, but lodging, dining, and evening options are more limited than in Crescent City, Arcata, or Eureka.
If you stay in Orick and Prairie Creek
Orick places the Kuchel Visitor Center and southern park approaches close to the lodging base, while Prairie Creek lies just north along the corridor. Seasonal permits, vehicle limits, and current road conditions still need direct confirmation before remote outings.
If you stay in Trinidad
Trinidad provides a more atmospheric coastal base than Orick while retaining reasonable access to the southern park corridor. It adds driving for northern redwood days and offers fewer services than Arcata or Eureka.
If you stay in Arcata and McKinleyville
Arcata and McKinleyville simplify an ACV arrival and provide more everyday services than the park-edge communities. The tradeoff is a northbound drive before most Redwood National and State Parks outings.
If you stay in Eureka
Eureka offers the broadest city experience but sits south of the national and state park corridor. It works for a mixed Humboldt itinerary, not for travelers trying to minimize every park commute.
