Pick the lake or attraction that owns the itinerary. The Finger Lakes region is wide enough that one central-looking base can create repeated cross-region drives.

Getting around

How a Finger Lakes base changes the route

A car is the practical default for winery, waterfall, and lake touring. Confirm local transit or seasonal attraction details when they are essential.

Best Seneca balance

If you stay in Geneva

Geneva is a flexible north Seneca base with an actual downtown. It is not the best location for daily Ithaca or Watkins Glen mornings.

Waterfalls and food

If you stay in Ithaca

Ithaca is the right base when gorges and a city-like food scene lead the trip. It is distant from the west side of the region.

South Seneca hikes

If you stay in Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen puts the gorge and south Seneca close. It is a better focused base than all-region compromise.

West lake base

If you stay in Canandaigua

Canandaigua is a practical west-side base with a lakefront town. It adds driving to the eastern lakes and Ithaca.

Museum and south east

If you stay in Corning

Corning is strongest when the museum and an east-side route belong in the trip. It is not on a Finger Lake and adds lake driving.

Quiet wine lake

If you stay in Hammondsport and Keuka Lake

Hammondsport is an intentional Keuka Lake base. It works best when the lake and nearby wineries carry most of the itinerary.
