St. John USVI island base chooser
Where to Stay in St. John, USVI
Cruz Bay puts the ferry, restaurants, and shops close, Great Cruz Bay and Chocolate Hole add resort and villa settings, Gifft Hill and Fish Bay trade walkability for hillside privacy, Cinnamon Bay is the park campground choice, Coral Bay and Bordeaux Mountain suit a quieter east side trip, and the East End and southeast shore require the most self-contained road plan. St John has no airport, so every overnight begins with ferry logistics from another island.

Where should you stay? Start with the trip.
Choose the ferry and road plan before choosing a room. St John is small on a map, but steep roads, limited parking, scarce North Shore lodging, and distinct west and east side services make the overnight base consequential.

Getting around
How a St. John base changes the trip
Passenger ferries arrive in Cruz Bay, while vehicle ferries use nearby Enighed Pond. Route 20 serves the North Shore and Route 10 crosses the island through Coral Bay toward Salt Pond; VITRAN covers selected corridors, so travelers should confirm current ferry, bus, taxi, parking, and property access details before booking.
If you stay in Cruz Bay
Cruz Bay is the island's arrival and service hub, with the passenger dock, taxi access, shops, and restaurants close together. The convenience does not extend islandwide, so beach and trail days still require taxis, buses on selected routes, or a rental vehicle.
If you stay in Great Cruz Bay and Chocolate Hole
Great Cruz Bay and Chocolate Hole form a southwest resort and villa zone rather than an extension of walkable Cruz Bay. The official VITRAN network includes Chocolate Hole, but exact property access and evening movement still need confirmation.
If you stay in Gifft Hill and Fish Bay
Gifft Hill and Fish Bay are villa territory, so access varies by driveway, elevation, and property. VITRAN identifies Gifft Hill service, while Fish Bay lodging is more vehicle dependent and should be checked against the exact map pin before payment.
If you stay in Cinnamon Bay
Cinnamon Bay Beach and Campground offers reserved bare sites, eco-tents, and cottages inside the park. It is the specialized North Shore overnight, not a general hotel district, and the NPS states that VITRAN does not serve North Shore Road.
If you stay in Coral Bay and Bordeaux Mountain
Coral Bay is St John's quieter eastern town, while Bordeaux Mountain places villa stays above the harbor. VITRAN connects Cruz Bay, Coral Bay, and Salt Pond on selected routes, but a vehicle remains practical for scattered cottages and trailheads.
If you stay in East End and the southeast shore
The East End and southeast shore require the most deliberate road plan. Official routes reach Salt Pond through Coral Bay, while East End villas depend on local roads, so the exact driveway, vehicle guidance, utilities, and grocery plan matter more than a broad island label.
