Ouray lodging base chooser
Where To Stay in Ouray and Nearby
Choose your Ouray address around the walk back from dinner and the activities you will repeat. Downtown, North, and South offer different access, while Ridgway is a separate valley alternative for a wider San Juan itinerary.
Start here
Where should you stay? Start with the trip.
Stay Downtown for the easiest Main Street evenings, North Ouray for river and hot springs access, or South Ouray for Box Canyon and Ice Park plans. Choose separate Ridgway only when a wider San Juan road itinerary matters more than sleeping in Ouray.
Pick the line that fits your trip, then use the area cards and tradeoff table to check what you gain and what you give up.

From area to stay
Turn the Ouray base choice into a property shortlist
Choose the corridor first, then compare non-ranked lodging formats inside it. Ridgway belongs in the shortlist only when the itinerary is regional and car-oriented.
Search inside Downtown, North, South, or the separate Ridgway option
Use the official Ouray lodging directory to compare hotels, inns, cabins, vacation rentals, river lodging, and RV or campground formats after choosing the base. Confirm the property address before treating the corridor label as a walkability promise.
Explore official Ouray lodging optionsRead the day as an outward and evening plan
Check the actual walk or seasonal shuttle ride to Main Street, hot springs, Box Canyon, and dinner. The shuttle runs June 1 through September 30, so plan winter Ice Park transport separately and recheck parking and attraction access.
Check the current Ouray shuttle informationBook Ridgway only when the wider route supports it
If Ridgway is the preferred base, verify the property-to-Ouray drive, parking, cancellation terms, and the group's comfort with the regional road plan. Use the official route guide for the broader San Juan context and recheck conditions before travel.

Three Ouray access checks
The town is compact, but the right base still depends on where the group wants to walk back from each day.
Downtown is the simplest return-walk choice
Main Street and the Visitor Center make Downtown the clearest base for central shops and restaurants. Check the exact address and property parking rather than assuming every Ouray listing is central.
The shuttle helps, but the address still matters
The June 1 through September 30 loop connects downtown with lodging, the river, hot springs, Box Cañon Falls, and Via Ferrata. Check the stop and last departure; do not rely on this service for winter Ice Park visits.
South Ouray needs an activity-first plan
Box Cañon Falls and the Ice Park create a distinct south corridor. Check seasonal access, current rules, and the official parking options before choosing a property for those activities.
Ridgway is a different base
Ridgway is a nearby separate valley town north of Ouray and can suit a wider road itinerary. It does not turn an Ouray evening into a walkable one, so compare the drive and weather plan first.

This is a sourced area chooser, not a hotel ranking. Official city, park, shuttle, lodging, planning, and regional route sources support the base decisions; Ridgway is a separate valley town, not an Ouray neighborhood.
