Getting around
How your Key West base changes the day
Key West is compact, but parking, cruise crowds, beach distance, and airport transfers still change the best lodging area.
The airport sits east of Old Town
Smathers Beach, New Town, and Stock Island reduce transfer friction. Old Town is still manageable, but the arrival and departure rides matter.
Old Town is the car-light answer
Duval Street, Mallory Square, the harbor, museums, and tours sit close together. Staying east trades that walking ease for beach or value.
The west waterfront gets the cruise movement
Mallory Square and Old Town are simplest for a short cruise-focused stay. Choose quieter blocks if the trip is not built around sunset crowds.
Beach-first trips move east
Smathers Beach and Fort Zachary Taylor change the lodging logic. Beach access improves, while spontaneous Old Town walks become less central.
