Istanbul neighborhood chooser
Where to Stay in Istanbul
Sultanahmet is the simplest base for a short first visit centered on the major historic sights. Karakoy and Galata give a stronger balance of old city access, dining, and evening energy, while Beyoglu, Besiktas, Nisantasi, and Kadikoy each trade central sightseeing convenience for a more specific city rhythm.

Getting around
How each Istanbul base changes the day
Istanbul rewards a base near the sights or transit lines you will use most. Verify current airport and network details before fixing a transfer plan.
If you stay in Sultanahmet
Most headline sights are close on foot. Use the tram and ferries for days outside the historic peninsula, and expect cross city trips to take more planning than a stay near Galata.
If you stay in Karakoy and Galata
Ferries, tram service, and the funicular make this a flexible two shore base. Hills around Galata matter when comparing a station on a map with the actual walk to a hotel.
If you stay in Taksim and Beyoglu
This area connects well to metro and funicular service, but the historic peninsula is a trip rather than a doorstep experience. Check the exact street because steep approaches and late noise vary block by block.
If you stay in Besiktas
Ferries are the great advantage here, while rail is less direct than in some central districts. Build sightseeing days around the waterfront network rather than assuming every route will be a simple metro trip.
If you stay in Nisantasi
Metro access helps with broader city movement, but ferries and the historic core need a connection. The quieter setting is the benefit, so do not choose it if every day begins on the old city side.
If you stay in Kadikoy
Frequent ferry use is part of the appeal, not an inconvenience to hide. Stay near the waterfront if crossing the Bosphorus often, and leave buffer for the last connection of the night.
