Where to Stay in Chania, Crete
Chania is not one hotel district. Stay inside the Old Town for harbour evenings, choose Nea Chora for city access plus a nearby sandy beach, use Halepa for a quieter east-side base, or move west to Agia Marina and Platanias when the beach resort is the trip.

Where should you stay? Start with the trip.
Choose Chania Old Town for a first visit focused on the Venetian harbour, historic lanes and evening dining. Nea Chora is the city and beach compromise, Halepa gives quieter nights and an easier east-side approach, and Agia Marina or Platanias works when a resort beach and westbound day trips matter more than walking back to the harbour every night.
Decide whether the trip is led by a harbour walk, a morning swim, a quieter east-side address or a resort beach outside the city. Chania's prefecture is larger than the Old Town postcard.

4 areas, and who each one suits
These four bases keep the decision geographic and useful. The west coast belt is named as a separate resort choice, not presented as another Old Town neighbourhood.

Narrow historic lanes, harbour views, restaurants and cultural stops in the city's oldest core
- Best for
- first-time visitors, couples and car-light trips built around harbour evenings and historic Chania
- Around
- the Venetian Harbour, old lanes, museums, restaurants and central bus connections
- Feel
- atmospheric, dense and visitor-facing after dark
- Stay style
- small hotels, restored houses, guesthouses, suites and apartment stays
Booking watch Ask where luggage can be unloaded, whether a car can reach the property and where guests park. A harbour address does not guarantee a lift, quiet room or direct vehicle approach.
Skip if your priority is a sandy beach outside the door or easy private parking for daily island drives

A west-of-the-walls waterfront district with a sandy beach, fishing harbour and tavernas
- Best for
- families, swimmers and travelers who want beach time with Chania evenings still in reach
- Around
- Nea Chora beach, the fishing harbour and the seafront route toward the Old Town
- Feel
- more open and local than the harbour lanes, with a beach-led daily rhythm
- Stay style
- small seaside hotels, apartments, studios and family-run guesthouses
Booking watch Check whether the property faces the beach road or a quieter side street, then confirm the walking route with luggage and its own parking terms.
Skip if the resort pool and organized beach infrastructure are the main point of the holiday

A district of historic villas, gardens and a calmer address east of the centre
- Best for
- travelers who want quieter nights, more room around the stay or an east-side departure pattern
- Around
- historic villas, the Halepa district, east-side roads and the approach toward Akrotiri
- Feel
- residential and slower than the harbour, with fewer attractions at the property doorstep
- Stay style
- boutique hotels, restored villas, apartments and guesthouses
Booking watch Check the actual route to the Old Town and airport, plus walking surfaces, slopes and private parking. Halepa is an area choice, not a promise that every address has the same access.
Skip if you want to step directly into the Venetian Harbour for every dinner or late-night walk

Organized sandy beaches, resort accommodation and a developed coastal strip west of Chania
- Best for
- families, pool-and-beach stays and itineraries where west Crete matters more than nightly harbour access
- Around
- sandy beaches, resort services, tavernas and the westbound coastal road
- Feel
- purpose-built and beach-led rather than historic or city-centered
- Stay style
- beach hotels, larger resorts, apartments, villas and family accommodation
Booking watch Check the exact resort town, beach access, pool season, transfer plan and return route to Chania. A west-coast listing can cover more than one settlement and daily traffic changes the practical distance.
Skip if you want Chania's harbour to be the easy default for every evening
Tradeoffs at a glance
Choose the coast routine before the room
A Chania address can mean a historic harbour lane, a town beach, a quieter eastern district or a resort strip west of the city. Compare your evening destination with your longest beach or airport journey before booking.

From area to stay
From the area decision to a property shortlist
Choose the city or coast routine first, then compare the property's entrance, parking and room facilities. Directory order is not a hotel ranking, and the area name does not verify every amenity.
Compare Chania accommodation formats
Use the official destination accommodation guide as a starting point, then verify the individual property. Ask about luggage access, parking, quiet rooms and the walk to the evening route that made you choose the area.
Browse Chania accommodationBuild the harbour and beach plan
Map the Old Town evening, the beach day and the longest west or east departure before you choose a room. Keep seasonal transport and beach services separate from the stable area decision.
Plan things to do in ChaniaConfirm the arrival connection
Use the airport operator for the bus connection, then check the current departure and the route to your accommodation entrance. A city arrival stop does not guarantee that a vehicle can reach an Old Town doorway.
Check Chania Airport bus informationGetting around
Make an airport and longest-day check
Test the arrival route and the day that takes you farthest from the room. The best Chania base is the one that makes both routines workable without pretending the city and the resort belt are interchangeable.
Match the property to the current airport connection
Chania Airport publishes public bus service to Chania, Rethymno and other destinations, and KTEL publishes current airport and Chania departures. Check the date-specific timetable, luggage approach and final walk before relying on public transport.
Choose town beach or resort beach on purpose
Nea Chora keeps a sandy beach beside the city, while Agia Marina and Platanias are a separate west-coast resort routine with broader organized beach infrastructure. Decide whether the beach is a morning option or the main setting before comparing rooms.
Treat parking and the final approach as booking facts
A rental car makes regional days easier but can add a final luggage problem in the Old Town. Ask every property about access and parking, then compare that answer with the airport route and the longest day trip you actually plan to take.
