Best fit

Travelers who want a small, walkable Caribbean island with one of Mexico's calmest swimming beaches, golf-cart touring, and reef snorkeling, either as a Cancun day trip or a slower two or three night base.

Start here

Take the Ultramar passenger ferry from Cancun, rent a golf cart for a day to loop the island south to Punta Sur, and save the early mornings for Playa Norte before the day boats land.

Do not assume

Isla Mujeres is small, only about four miles long, and it takes a heavy midday crowd off the Cancun day boats. The island is calmest early in the morning and after the last ferries leave.

The planning sequence

Use the sequence below to decide how this should shape the trip.

Thing to doWhy it mattersPlanning note
Playa NorteThe calm swimming beach at the north tipA wide public beach of soft sand and shallow, clear water with no real drop-off, a short walk from the ferry pier and the town. It faces west, so it is also the island's sunset beach. There is no admission, though the beach clubs charge for chairs and drinks.
Punta SurThe southern point and the easternmost tip of MexicoThe far south end drops to sea cliffs with a coastal sculpture garden, a small lighthouse, and the ruins of a Maya temple to Ixchel, goddess of the moon and fertility. As the easternmost point of Mexico it is the first place in the country to see the sunrise. There is a small admission.
MUSA underwater museumSnorkel or dive among submerged sculpturesThe Museo Subacuatico de Arte sinks hundreds of concrete human figures by artist Jason deCaires Taylor into shallow water between the island and Cancun, now growing coral. Reach it on a snorkel trip, a dive, or a glass-bottom boat booked in town.
Golf-cart loopThe classic way to see the islandRenting a golf cart for a half or full day is how most visitors tour the perimeter road, running south past Garrafon reef park to Punta Sur. Carts book out on busy days and over holidays, so reserve one ahead.
Whale shark toursSwim beside the world's largest fishIn season, roughly mid-May through September, regulated tours run north of the island to snorkel alongside whale sharks that gather to feed. Trips depart from the island and dates shift year to year, so confirm before booking.
1Cross on the Ultramar passenger ferry from Gran Puerto or Puerto Juarez in Cancun, a ride of roughly 15 to 20 minutes, and leave any rental car on the mainland.
2Spend the first morning at Playa Norte, a short walk from the pier, while the water is calm and the day boats have not yet landed.
3Rent a golf cart and loop the island south past Garrafon to Punta Sur for the cliffs, the sculptures, and the Ixchel temple.
4Book a MUSA snorkel trip, or in season a whale shark tour, and keep the evenings for Hidalgo Avenue in town once the day-trippers have gone.

The colorful town at the north end

El Centro packs the ferries, the food, and the cart rentals into a few blocks

The town, El Centro, sits at the north end where the ferries land, a compact grid of low, brightly painted buildings around the pedestrian strip of Hidalgo Avenue and its restaurants, cart rentals, and dive shops. The island took its name, Island of Women, from the Maya female figurines that Spanish sailors found here in 1517, offerings to the goddess Ixchel whose temple still stands at the south point. Because everything downtown is close together and Playa Norte is a short walk from the pier, most visitors leave the cart parked and explore the center on foot.

Go early or stay the night

The day-boat crowds from Cancun peak around midday, so the island is calmest early in the morning and after the last ferries leave, which is the argument for staying a night or two rather than rushing a few midday hours.

Reserve the golf cart ahead

Carts are the way to see the island but sell out on busy days and over holidays, so book one the day before rather than counting on a walk-up rental at the pier.

Bring pesos and reef-safe sunscreen

Smaller vendors, beach clubs, and the Punta Sur park often prefer cash, and the reef parks require reef-safe sunscreen to protect the coral.

Planning traps

Mistakes to avoid

These are the small decisions that quietly derail an otherwise good plan.

1. Trying to bring a car across

The ferries from Cancun are passenger boats, and there is no reason to bring a car onto an island only about four miles long where a golf cart, taxi, or your own feet cover everything.

2. Only coming for a few midday hours

A quick midday day trip lands you on the island at its most crowded. Arriving early or staying overnight is when Playa Norte and the town are at their best.

3. Skipping the south end

Many day-trippers never get past Playa Norte, but the sea cliffs, the sculpture garden, and the Ixchel temple at Punta Sur are the most distinctive sight on the island.
