Red sandstone canyon walls and a freestanding rock monolith in Colorado National Monument, with the green Grand Valley and the pale Book Cliffs stretching away behind under a wide sky

Top 15 · Local ConsensusUpdated August 2026

Grand Junction is the town people use to get to somewhere else, usually Moab. That is a mistake by about a day and a half. It has a national monument with a twenty three mile clifftop road inside its city limits, a wine district fifteen minutes east, real dinosaur bone lying in the open ground west of town, and a river park you can float. Everything below is ranked, and every price and opening hour comes from the operator rather than a roundup. One number to have before you set off: the national monument charges twenty five dollars a vehicle, valid for seven days, and that single pass covers the drive, the visitor center and every trail inside it.

Rim Rock Drive, Colorado National Monument

Scenic driveColorado National Monumentthe monument and the road are open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, subject to temporary closure for rock slides or snow$10 to $25

Twenty three miles of road cut along the top of a canyon wall, with three tunnels and a run of overlooks that drop straight into red rock. It is the reason Grand Junction is worth a stop rather than a fuel stop, and you can drive the whole thing in an afternoon or spend two days walking off it.

Local tipFour of the overlooks are wheelchair accessible: Book Cliffs View, Independence Monument View, Coke Ovens and Cold Shivers Point. That is worth knowing because most of the trails here are not.

A mile and a half loop past dinosaur bone still lying in the rock where it was found, beside an active quarry, with interpretive panels doing the explaining. There is no fee, no gate and no ticket. Very few places in the United States let you walk up to fossil in place for nothing.

Local tipIt is off Interstate 70 at exit 2, which is thirty miles west of Grand Junction and two miles from the Utah line, so this is the pick to do on the way out toward Moab rather than as a round trip.

    Dinosaur Journey

Paleontology museumFruitaten until five in spring and summer, ten until four in fall and winter, with the operator not publishing the exact changeover dates$10 to $25

The indoor half of the same story: real fossils from the Grand Valley, animatronics for the children, and working paleontology labs you can see into. Eleven dollars for an adult and seven for a child makes it the best value indoor hour in the valley.

Local tipPair it with the Trail Through Time on the same westbound run. The museum explains what the trail shows you, and doing them in that order works better than the reverse.

    Riverfront at Las Colonias Park

River parkDowntown riverfrontthe city does not post gate hours for the parkFree

A hundred and thirty acres on the Colorado River next to downtown, with a built water channel you can actually float or paddle, ponds, a zipline, and the amphitheater that has become the town's outdoor concert venue. It is free to walk into, it is five minutes from Main Street, and on a hundred degree July afternoon it is the most sensible thing in this town.

Local tipThe city describes the water channel as accessible to a wide range of ages and abilities, which is a deliberate design choice rather than marketing. If you have not paddled before, this is the stretch to start on. Check the amphitheater listings separately, because a concert night changes the parking here completely.

The valley's history told in one downtown building, from the Ute people through the Old Spanish Trail to the uranium boom, with an observation tower on top for the geography. Eleven dollars, and the tower alone is two.

Local tipThe tower closes half an hour before the museum does, at half past three. If the view is what you came for, do not leave it until the end of the visit.

Visitor centerColorado National Monumentnine until four daily, extended to five in summer, closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's DayFree with paid options

Start here rather than at an overlook. It is the only place in the monument that explains the geology you are about to drive through, and the eighteen minute film does more for the drive than any pull off does. It is also the most accessible building in the park.

Local tipThe accessibility provision here is genuinely good and rarely advertised: ramped entrance for drop off, open captioned video, an induction loop for hearing aids and assisted listening devices at the desk.

WineryRedlandsMonday to Saturday half past ten until five, Sunday noon until five, with the last tasting at quarter past four$10 to $25

Colorado wine is a real industry and this valley is where nearly all of it happens. Two Rivers has been making Chardonnay, Cabernet and Riesling here since 1999 and charges ten dollars for a seven wine flight, which is the cheapest structured introduction to the region you will find.

Local tipThe last tasting goes at quarter past four even though the room stays open until five. Arriving at half past four gets you a room and no flight.

Three quarters of a mile each way to a grotto walled in by a ring of enormous boulders, which is the best short hike in the monument and the one that gets children off the back seat. It crosses a wash and climbs slickrock steps, so it is a real walk rather than a stroll.

Local tipTrailhead parking is small. The Devils Kitchen picnic area next door has more, and adds about three minutes on foot.

Downtown Grand Junction has been putting art on its streets since the Art on the Corner sculpture collection started in 1984, and the mural program filled in the alleys and breezeways that the sculptures do not reach. It is free, self guided and it makes an hour of walking Main Street into something.

Local tipThe murals are deliberately in the awkward spaces, breezeways, alleys, the backs of parking garages. Walking Main Street alone will miss most of them, so use the operator's map.

Where things cluster

The town sits in the middle. The monument is southwest, Fruita and the fossil ground are west along Interstate 70, Palisade is east, and the Grand Mesa is an hour east and six thousand feet up.

  1. Rim Rock DriveThe clifftop road, the visitor center and the short trails sit inside one seven day vehicle pass.
  2. Main Street and the riverfrontThe history museum, the murals, the amphitheater and Las Colonias Park are all within a few minutes of each other.
  3. Twelve miles westThe dinosaur museum, the state park section and the biking trailheads cluster around Fruita and Loma.
  4. The wine ground eastFifteen minutes east on Interstate 70, where the orchards and most of the wineries are.
  5. An hour east and a mile upTen thousand feet, lakes and forest, and a seasonal visitor center from late May to late September.

Make it a day

One day

Monument first, river after

Buy the twenty five dollar vehicle pass and be at the Saddlehorn Visitor Center when it opens at nine. Watch the eighteen minute film, then drive Rim Rock Drive east to west with stops at Independence Monument View and Coke Ovens, and walk Devils Kitchen if you have an hour and shoes. Come down into town for lunch, then spend the hot part of the afternoon at Las Colonias Park on the river, which costs nothing. If there is light left, walk the Walls in the Wild murals through downtown before dinner.

Weekend

Rock on Saturday, bone and wine on Sunday

Give Saturday to the monument, properly: the visitor center, the full length of Rim Rock Drive, Devils Kitchen, and an early evening back down at Connected Lakes when the light goes long. On Sunday head west on Interstate 70 instead. Dinosaur Journey in Fruita first so the story makes sense, then thirty miles further to Rabbit Valley and the Trail Through Time, where the bone is still in the ground and there is no fee. Come back east and finish at Two Rivers with a ten dollar flight, remembering the last pour goes at quarter past four.

The National Park Service is blunt about the summer here: valley floor highs run into the low hundreds and the canyon country can pass a hundred and ten. Winter brings around thirty one inches of snow. Spring and early fall are the only two windows where the hiking and the driving are both comfortable, which is why they are the answer.

Plan with confidence

Grand Junction things to do FAQ

What the monument actually costs, what is free, when the heat becomes a problem, and why Moab is not on this list.

How much does Colorado National Monument cost?

Twenty five dollars for a private vehicle and everyone in it, valid for seven consecutive days. A motorcycle is twenty dollars, and an individual arriving on foot or by bicycle aged sixteen or over pays fifteen. Children under sixteen are free. An annual pass to the monument alone is forty five dollars, and America the Beautiful interagency passes are accepted. That single vehicle fee covers Rim Rock Drive, the Saddlehorn Visitor Center and every trail inside the boundary, including Devils Kitchen, so three of the picks on this list share one payment.

What is free to do in Grand Junction?

Six of the fifteen picks cost nothing at all. The Trail Through Time at Rabbit Valley has no fee and no gate, which is unusual for a site with fossil in place. Las Colonias Park on the river is free, including the water channel. The Walls in the Wild murals are free and self guided. The Mack Ridge and Kokopelli trail system charges nothing. The Grand Mesa Visitor Center is free, though it only opens from late May to late September. Two more, Devils Kitchen and the Saddlehorn Visitor Center, charge nothing themselves but sit inside the monument, so they are covered by the vehicle pass rather than being free outright, and this list marks them that way rather than pretending otherwise.

Is Grand Junction too hot in summer?

It can be, and it is worth taking seriously rather than shrugging at. The National Park Service states that summer highs reach the low hundreds on the valley floor and can exceed a hundred and ten in the surrounding canyon country, across a monument that spans four thousand to nearly seven thousand feet. That is a different proposition from a Colorado mountain trip and catches people who packed for one. If you are here in July or August, do the rock in the morning, carry more water than feels necessary, and give the middle of the day to the river at Las Colonias or the Grand Mesa an hour east, where it is thousands of feet cooler.

Do you need a car?

Yes, for this list. Grand Valley Transit runs fixed bus routes across Mesa County serving Grand Junction, Palisade and Fruita, with fares paid through the Token Transit app, and it is genuinely useful for getting around town. But nothing on it reaches the top of Rim Rock Drive, the Rabbit Valley trailhead thirty miles west, or the Grand Mesa. A vehicle is the practical answer for everything outside the downtown core.

Is Colorado wine actually any good?

It is a real industry rather than a novelty, and this valley is where most of it happens, in Palisade fifteen minutes east and on the Redlands west of town. Two Rivers has been producing here since 1999 and charges ten dollars for a flight of seven, which is the cheapest way to answer the question for yourself. Carlson Vineyards in Palisade sells by the glass, bottle or flight without requiring a reservation for groups of up to six. The high desert elevation and the big day to night temperature swing are the reason the reds hold acidity, and tasting three of them in an afternoon tells you more than any description will.

Why is Moab not on this list?

Because it is a hundred and ten miles away, in another state, and it has its own guide on this site, linked below. The same applies to Glenwood Springs, ninety miles east, which also has its own page. Grand Junction gets treated as a waypoint on the way to Arches and Canyonlands, and the point of this list is that it does not have to be: the monument, the fossil ground at Rabbit Valley, the wine district and the river fill two days without leaving the Grand Valley.
