Things to Do in Bora Bora: The Lagoon, Matira Beach, and Beyond the Resort

Bora Bora is a lagoon with an island in it, so the best days happen on the water. Anchor the trip on one full lagoon tour and Matira Beach, then decide how much of Mount Otemanu you want to see by 4×4, boat, or trail.

Best fit

Honeymooners and lagoon lovers with 3 to 5 days on the island who want the famous water plus a look at the real Bora Bora: Vaitape town, the beach locals actually use, and the volcanic peak behind it all.

Start here

Book the full day lagoon tour before you fly. Small boat circuits with a motu lunch sell out around holidays and the shared tours are the single best value on an otherwise expensive island.

Getting in

Air Tahiti and Air Moana fly Papeete to Bora Bora (BOB) in about 50 minutes. The airport sits on its own motu: resorts collect guests by private boat, and a public shuttle boat runs everyone else across the lagoon to Vaitape.

The planning sequence

Use the sequence below to decide how this should shape the trip.

Do thisWhat it isPlanning note
Full day lagoon tourBoat circuit of the lagoon with snorkel stops and a motu lunchThe one unmissable day: blacktip reef sharks and stingrays in the shallows, Coral Gardens snorkeling, and the views back at Otemanu from the water.
Matira BeachThe island's big public beach at the southern tipFree, walkable, and genuinely beautiful: a long shelf of sand into swimmable turquoise water, with snack stands and sunset that faces the right way.
Mount Otemanu up closeThe 727 meter volcanic tooth at the island's centerYou do not summit Otemanu; you circle it. A 4×4 tour climbs to ridge lookouts and WWII gun sites, or see it from the water on the lagoon circuit.
Vaitape townThe main village and ferry quayPearl shops, food trucks called roulottes, the market, and real prices ashore; rent a bike or scooter here to loop the 32 km coast road.
Bloody Mary'sThe island's famous sand floor restaurantA kitschy institution since 1979 with a celebrity board out front; go for the scene at least once, and book dinner ahead in high season.
1Reserve the lagoon tour and any overwater bungalow nights first; both are the trip's fixed points and the bungalow categories with Otemanu views sell out furthest ahead.
2Fly Papeete to BOB and note the transfer: resort boats meet the plane, but independent travelers take the airport shuttle boat to Vaitape and onward taxis or hotel pickups from the quay.
3Aim for the May through October dry season for the clearest water and least rain; November through April is warmer, wetter, and cheaper.
4Carry a card but expect francs: French Polynesia uses the CFP franc (XPF), and small operators, roulottes, and beach stands often prefer cash.

The free day

Matira is the day that costs nothing

Bora Bora's prices are real, but its best beach is public. Matira runs along the island's southern point with a sand bottom that stays waist deep for a hundred meters, which is why locals, day trippers, and resort guests all end up here. Pair it with lunch from a roulotte in Vaitape and the island's cheapest day is also one of its best.

Spend the money on the water, not the room service

The lagoon is the whole point. A shared full day tour typically includes the shark and ray shallows, Coral Gardens snorkeling among clouds of reef fish, and a grilled lunch on a private motu. Private charters do the same circuit on your schedule for a multiple of the price; the shared boat is the value play.

Pick your Otemanu angle

The peak is a crumbling volcanic core and there is no tourist route to the top. The choices are a 4×4 excursion to ridge viewpoints and WWII coastal guns, a guided hike partway up the flanks for the fit, or the postcard angle from the water on the lagoon day. Photographers get the classic shot from the Matira side in late afternoon.

Stay on the motu or on the mainland, and know the tradeoff

Overwater bungalows sit on the barrier motus facing the peak, which means every trip to town or Matira is a boat ride. Mainland guesthouses and small hotels near Matira cost a fraction, put the beach and restaurants at your feet, and use the same lagoon on the same tours.

Give Vaitape an honest half day

The village by the quay is where the island actually lives: the market, black pearl shops where haggling is normal, roulottes serving poisson cru and grilled mahi at non resort prices, and bike rental for the flat 32 km belt road past churches and fruit stands.

Planning traps

Mistakes to avoid

These are the small decisions that quietly derail an otherwise good plan.

1. Booking every dinner at the resort

Resort dining doubles an already expensive trip. Vaitape's roulottes and Matira's casual spots serve excellent poisson cru, chow mein, and grilled fish at a third of resort prices, and Bloody Mary's covers the one splurge night.

2. Assuming you can climb Mount Otemanu

There is no maintained summit trail and the rock is rotten volcanic tuff; guided hikes stop at ledges on the flanks. Treat the mountain as scenery, not a summit bid, and nobody goes home disappointed.

3. Skipping reef safe basics

The lagoon's coral took bleaching damage in recent warm years and operators ask for mineral sunscreen. Bring reef safe SPF and water shoes from home; both cost triple on the island.

FAQ

Common planning questions

How many days do you need in Bora Bora?
Three full days covers the essentials: one lagoon tour day, one for Matira Beach and Vaitape, and one for a 4×4 or hiking look at Mount Otemanu. Honeymooners commonly stretch the same list across five slower days.
Is Bora Bora doable on a budget?
More than its reputation suggests. Mainland guesthouses near Matira, roulotte dinners, the free public beach, and a shared lagoon tour build a real trip at a fraction of overwater bungalow pricing.
Can you swim with sharks in Bora Bora?
Yes. Blacktip reef sharks and stingrays gather in the sandy shallows inside the lagoon and every full day tour stops there. The animals are habituated and encounters are waist deep, guided, and routine.
How do you get from the airport to your hotel?
Bora Bora's runway occupies a separate motu. Resorts send branded boats to the airport dock, while the public shuttle boat crosses to Vaitape's quay, where taxis and guesthouse pickups wait.
When is the best time to visit Bora Bora?
May through October, the austral winter dry season, brings the clearest lagoon water and the least rain. November through April is hotter and stormier but noticeably cheaper and still swimmable.
