Bentonville is a small Arkansas town that spent the last fifteen years building world class museums and a mountain bike network at the same time, and the striking thing is how much of both is free. Crystal Bridges, the Momentary, the Museum of Native American History, the Walmart Museum and the art galleries inside the 21c hotel all state on their own sites that general admission costs nothing. Nine of the fifteen picks below are free outright and a tenth is free to enter. The two things worth knowing before you come are that the bike trails start a few minutes from the square rather than out of town, and that the one big paid attraction is the children's museum.

#1Best for anyone visiting Bentonville at all · #1 of 15Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art
Art museumMuseum Wayopen six days a week with the museum closed on Tuesdays, later closing on Thursday and Friday evenings, and summer hours between Memorial Day and Labor Day that differ from the rest of the yearFree with paid optionsThe museum states plainly that general admission is free, and it holds one of the strongest collections of American art anywhere outside the coasts, in a set of gallery pavilions bridged over spring fed ponds in a ravine. A 114,000 square foot expansion of galleries and studios opened in June 2026, so there is more of it than most guides describe.
Local tipMembers, veterans, anyone aged 25 and under and SNAP recipients get free entry to the ticketed special exhibitions as well, not only to the free permanent collection. Parking in the garage is free for everyone.

Coler Mountain Bike Preserve
Bike preserveWest Bentonvilleopen every day from sunrise until 11 at night, which is later than most trail systems keepFreeThree hundred acres of purpose built trail sit a few minutes from the square, with more than twenty miles of singletrack running from beginner green through to jump lines. It is the clearest sign of what separates Bentonville from other towns its size.
Local tipThe preserve stays open until 11 at night, far later than a normal city park, and there is a coffee bar at the trailhead that opens at seven in the morning and closes at seven.

3Best for contemporary art and evening visits · #3 of 15
The Momentary
Contemporary art space8th Streetclosed Mondays, open from mid morning to early evening Tuesday through Sunday, with later Friday and Saturday closing and shut on Thanksgiving and Christmas DayFreeA former Kraft cheese plant south of downtown now holds contemporary art, performance and a rooftop bar, and the operator states that general admission is free. It is the modern counterweight to the historic collection at Crystal Bridges and it is run by the same institution.
Local tipIt closes on Mondays and stays open until eight on Friday and Saturday, so it works as an evening stop on the two nights when most Bentonville museums have already shut.
-
4Best for history without an entry fee · #4 of 15
Museum of Native American History
History museumDowntownopen Tuesday through Saturday from late morning to late afternoon, closed on Sundays and MondaysFreeThe museum states that admission is free, and it covers roughly fourteen thousand years of North American history through artifacts rather than through panels alone. It is a short walk from the square and it is the least crowded of the town's free museums.
Local tipIt is closed on Sundays and Mondays, which is the opposite pattern to most of Bentonville, so a weekend trip needs to catch it on the Saturday.
-
5Best for understanding the town itself · #5 of 15
Walmart Museum
History museumDowntownopen late every day, until nine Monday through Thursday, until ten on Friday and Saturday, and from midday to early evening on SundayFreeThe company began in a five and dime on the Bentonville square, and the museum on that site is free and stays open into the evening. Whatever you think of the subject, it explains why a town of this size has the museums and the trails that it has.
Local tipIt closes at nine most nights and at ten on Friday and Saturday, later than anything else downtown except the 21c galleries, so it is the easiest thing to fit in after dinner.
-
6Best for riding straight out of downtown · #6 of 15
Slaughter Pen Trail
Trail systemDowntown and northan open access trail system with no published gate hours, reached from the Compton Gardens trailhead in the middle of townFreeThis is the original Bentonville trail system, begun in 2013 and now more than thirty miles, and it starts at the entrance to Compton Gardens beside the Peel Museum rather than out at the edge of town. It runs north through Ozark forest toward Bella Vista.
Local tipThe system includes a dedicated skills park built for progression, so it is a better first stop than Coler if you have never ridden anything technical.
-
7Best for families with young children · #7 of 15
Scott Family Amazeum
Children's museumMuseum Wayclosed on Tuesdays, with a later Wednesday evening closing and normal daytime hours the rest of the week$10 to $25This is the one big paid attraction in a town full of free ones, a hands on museum for children next door to Crystal Bridges, at seventeen dollars for adults and for children aged two and over. Members and under twos enter free.
Local tipThe campus parking is shared with Crystal Bridges and is free for both, so the two work as a single stop rather than two drives.
-
8Best for a late evening art stop · #8 of 15
21c Museum Hotel Bentonville
Art galleriesDowntownopen around the clock, every day, with no admission desk to catchFreeThe contemporary art galleries inside this hotel on the square are open around the clock and free of charge, which no other gallery in town can say. You can walk in at eleven at night and the work is still there.
Local tipBecause it never closes and costs nothing, it is the right stop after dinner on the square when every museum except the Walmart Museum has shut.
-

Peel Museum and Botanical Garden
Historic houseDowntown edgewalk up guided tours every thirty minutes from mid morning to late afternoon, Tuesday through SaturdayFreeGuided tours of this Victorian house and its gardens are free and run every thirty minutes, Tuesday through Saturday, on a walk up basis with no booking. It is the oldest thing on this list by a long way.
Local tipThe Slaughter Pen trail system begins at the Compton Gardens entrance right here, so the historic house and the bike network share a corner of town.

8th Street Market
Food hall district8th Streetopen every day from eleven in the morning until eleven at night, with individual kitchens keeping their own shorter hours inside that windowFree with paid optionsA former Tyson chicken processing plant now holds roughly a dozen independent kitchens and shops as an outdoor social district, running from eleven in the morning until eleven at night every day. There is a culinary school on the site as well.
Local tipIt keeps the longest hours of anywhere on this list and sits a few minutes from the Momentary, so the two make an easy pair on the south side.
-
11Best for an easy walk rather than a ride · #11 of 15
Osage Park
City parkSouth Bentonvilleopen daily from sunrise to sunsetFreeFloating boardwalks run out over a restored wetland here, alongside eight pickleball courts, an archery range and a dog park. It is a different shape of outdoor stop from the forest trail systems and it is open sunrise to sunset with no admission stated.
Local tipThe wetland boardwalk is the part worth the drive, and it is a flat easy walk, which makes this the outdoor pick that works for people who are not riding.
-
12Best for a Saturday morning · #12 of 15
Bentonville Farmers Market
Farmers marketDowntownSaturday mornings only, from half past seven until one, across the listed outdoor seasonFreeThe outdoor market takes over the Bentonville Square on Saturday mornings from half past seven until one. Browsing costs nothing and it is the one morning a week when the square is the busiest place in town.
Local tipIt is Saturday only and seasonal, so a midweek trip will find an empty square. The listed 2026 outdoor season runs from the middle of August to the end of October.
-

Meteor Guitar Gallery
Live music venueDowntownshow nights vary with the booking calendar and the shop keeps its own daytime hours, neither of which is published as a fixed scheduleTicketedA restored movie theater about a century old now works as both a guitar shop holding over a thousand instruments and amplifiers and a live music room. The Climb Bentonville
Climbing gymSouth Bentonvilleopen from mid morning to late evening on weekdays with a shorter SundayTicketedAn indoor climbing gym selling day passes, which is the useful thing to know in a town whose main attraction is outdoors. It is the reliable option on a wet day or in the worst of the August heat.
Local tipThe day pass price is not printed on the page and only appears once you open the booking flow, so check the cost before you drive over.

15Best for one proper dinner out · #15 of 15
The Preacher's Son
RestaurantDowntowndinner service every evening with a later close on Friday and Saturday, and the rooftop bar closed Sundays and dependent on the weatherVariesThe most ambitious dining room downtown sits in a converted church a block off the square, with a separate rooftop bar called Celeste above it that keeps its own hours. Dinner only, and the kitchen does not publish its prices.
Local tipThe rooftop is weather dependent and closed on Sundays, while the dining room serves seven nights, so do not plan a Sunday around the roof.
Where things cluster
Bentonville is small enough that the square, the museums and the trailheads are all within a few minutes of each other, which is the whole reason the place works the way it does.
- The Bentonville SquareThe old courthouse square holds the Walmart Museum, the 21c galleries, the Saturday market and most of the restaurants, all within one block.
- Museum WayCrystal Bridges and the Amazeum sit next to each other north of the square, sharing free parking and joined to downtown by a walking trail.
- The 8th Street districtTwo former food plants south of downtown, one now the Momentary and one now 8th Street Market, holding the late night half of the town.
- Coler and the west sideThe three hundred acre bike preserve and its trailhead coffee bar, a few minutes west of the square rather than out of town.
- South BentonvilleOsage Park with its wetland boardwalks and pickleball courts, plus the indoor climbing gym, spread along the southern edge.
Make it a day
Museums first, trails after
Start at Crystal Bridges when it opens, because the free permanent collection deserves the fresh part of the day and the new galleries have doubled what there is to see. Walk the trail down into town for lunch on the square, then take in the Walmart Museum and the Museum of Native American History, both free and both a block apart. Spend the late afternoon at Coler or on the Slaughter Pen trails, which start beside Compton Gardens. Finish at 8th Street Market, which serves until eleven. If it is a Saturday, put the farmers market on the square at the very start instead.
The square, then the south side
Give the first day to the north half: Crystal Bridges in the morning, the Amazeum next door if there are children, then the square in the afternoon for the Walmart Museum, the free galleries inside the 21c hotel and the Peel house tour. On the second day take the south side, with the Momentary in the morning, 8th Street Market for lunch and Osage Park or the Coler trails in the afternoon. Keep the evening free for a booked show at the Meteor if the calendar has one, and remember that the 21c galleries never close if you want art at midnight.

Spring and autumn are the season here, because the trails and the outdoor half of the town are the point and Arkansas summers are hot and humid. April, May, September and October give you rideable weather and open gardens, and the listed outdoor farmers market season runs from the middle of August to the end of October. Winter narrows the outdoor half but leaves the free indoor half intact: Crystal Bridges, the Momentary, the Walmart Museum, the Museum of Native American History and the 21c galleries all run year round.

Bentonville things to do FAQ
What is actually free, which days each museum shuts, and whether you need a bike, answered before you go.
Is Crystal Bridges really free?
Yes. The museum states that general admission is free, and the garage parking is free as well. Special exhibitions are ticketed separately, but members, veterans, anyone aged 25 and under and SNAP recipients get free entry to those too. A 114,000 square foot expansion of galleries and studios opened in June 2026, so there is more to see than older guides suggest.
What can you do in Bentonville for free?
Most of it. Crystal Bridges, the Momentary, the Museum of Native American History and the Walmart Museum all state on their own sites that admission is free, the contemporary art galleries inside the 21c hotel are free and open around the clock, and the Peel house runs free guided tours every half hour. The Coler preserve, the Slaughter Pen trails, Osage Park and the Saturday market on the square cost nothing either.
Do you need a bike to enjoy Bentonville?
No, though the trail network is the thing the town is known for. The museums, the square, the Peel house and 8th Street Market all work entirely on foot, and Osage Park has flat boardwalks over a wetland for an easy outdoor hour. If you do want to ride, the Slaughter Pen system starts beside Compton Gardens in the middle of town, so you do not need to drive out anywhere.
Which Bentonville museums are closed on which days?
They do not agree with each other, which catches people out. Crystal Bridges closes on Tuesdays, the Amazeum closes on Tuesdays, the Momentary closes on Mondays, and the Museum of Native American History closes on Sundays and Mondays. The Walmart Museum opens every day and stays open into the evening, and the 21c galleries never close at all.
How long do you need in Bentonville?
One full day covers Crystal Bridges, the square and an afternoon on the trails, which is the core of it. Two days lets you add the Momentary and 8th Street Market on the south side and take the museums at a pace that does not feel like a march, without cutting the riding short.
When is the Bentonville farmers market?
Saturday mornings on the Bentonville Square, from half past seven until one, across the listed outdoor season that runs from the middle of August to the end of October in 2026. It is Saturday only, so a midweek visit will find the square quiet. Browsing costs nothing and the vendors set their own prices.
