Tahiti to Moorea Ferry: Operators, Car Tickets and Vaiare Arrival

The Tahiti to Moorea ferry runs from Papeete’s gare maritime to Vaiare, with separate operator choices including Aremiti Express, Tauati Ferry, Terevau and Vaeara’i. Choose a sailing that fits your arrival and book the correct passenger or vehicle product, without assuming one company’s ticket secures space on another company’s sailing.

Answer first

The useful answer

Use this summary to identify the checks that matter before you act.

Route, operator and boarding sources checked October 3, 2026. Select the dated sailing week and confirm vehicle space with the chosen operator before traveling to the terminal.

Board at Papeete, arrive at Vaiare

Save these two names with your ticket. Moorea is the island; Vaiare is the arrival point to give your pickup contact.

A car changes the booking

Check the vehicle’s dimensions and the sailing’s available space. A passenger ticket alone does not describe the vehicle you intend to bring.

Buy from the right operator

Match the company on the ticket to the company running the sailing. Similar route names are not evidence that tickets can be exchanged between them.

Choose the return before the day fills up

Compare the return departures while planning the outward journey, particularly if you must reach Tahiti for a flight or an overnight booking.

Decision tool

Choose the booking that matches your crossing

All these route choices connect Papeete and Vaiare, but ticket conditions belong to the selected operator. Use the dated schedule and vehicle availability for the day you intend to travel.

Your choice What to book or verify Before heading to the ferry
Aremiti Express on foot Aremiti 5 or Aremiti 6 passenger ticket Its site advertises 360-day ticket validity across Aremiti 5 and 6. Check the ticket’s own terms and reach boarding at least 30 minutes before departure; travel remains subject to space.

Aremiti Express with a vehicle Correct vehicle category and space on the sailing Declare accurate dimensions, type and registration. The driver must present at least 30 minutes before; registration closes 10 minutes before. Other occupants use foot access.

Tauati Ferry Tuatea’s Tahiti to Moorea booking Use the separate Tuatea booking product and confirm its own passenger or vehicle instructions. Do not carry Aremiti Express timing or ticket assumptions into this purchase.

Terevau Operator contact and departure information through DPAM Use the maritime authority directory to reach Terevau and confirm current service, space and boarding instructions before buying around a presumed departure.

Vaeara’i The operator’s Tahiti to Moorea schedule and tickets Choose the intended date and direction, then check the passenger and vehicle categories offered for that departure. Use Vaeara’i’s conditions for this sailing.

Write down the three parts of the journey

  • Tahiti transfer: where you start, how you reach Papeete’s gare maritime, and your boarding arrival target.

  • Crossing: company, vessel or product, departure date, passenger tickets and confirmed vehicle details.

  • Moorea arrival: Vaiare pickup contact, meeting instruction and destination; repeat the exercise for the return.

Moorea scenery

Cook’s Bay is scenery, not the ferry arrival point

The mountains and water around Cook’s Bay show another part of Moorea. The Papeete crossing arrives at Vaiare, so give that landing name to anyone arranging your onward pickup.

Practical guide

Build the plan

Keep the operator names separate

The maritime authority lists Aremiti 5 and 6, Tauati Ferry, Terevau and Vaeara’i between Papeete and Vaiare. Use that directory to identify the company you want, then finish the schedule and ticket check on its own booking or contact surface.

Aremiti Express advertises tickets usable on Aremiti 5 and 6, while Tuatea offers a separate Tauati Ferry product. If you change operators to get a different departure, establish the new fare and ticket conditions before assuming your existing purchase can follow you.

Plan an airport arrival from the ferry backward

If you arrive in Tahiti by air, do not treat the flight’s scheduled landing time as the start of ferry boarding. Allow your own margin for leaving the airport, collecting your belongings and reaching Papeete’s gare maritime, then compare that plan with the operator’s dated departures.

When that leaves little room for a delay, make an overnight Tahiti plan before paying for a Moorea commitment that cannot move. Recheck the departure choices after a flight change; this is a separate sea journey, and the next usable ferry must fit your party and any vehicle.

Check car space before settling the island itinerary

Aremiti’s schedule uses a vehicle availability legend, including cases that direct the traveler to the ticket office. Treat that instruction as a booking task to resolve, not as confirmation that a car can simply arrive and join the crossing.

Have the actual vehicle details available when choosing its category, especially if a rental reservation has not yet established which vehicle you will collect. Ask the ferry operator how to handle any change before travel, and separately check the rental agreement before planning to take that vehicle between islands.

Coordinate the driver and the rest of the party

For Aremiti Express, the driver’s access and the other occupants’ foot access are different parts of boarding. Agree where tickets and the items each person needs will be kept before the group separates, and follow crew directions rather than moving onto the ramp independently.

Passengers requiring reduced-mobility assistance should notify Aremiti when buying and present at least 45 minutes before departure under its published conditions. If you choose another operator, arrange assistance with that company and use the instructions it gives for your booking.

Make Vaiare the pickup point

Give the person meeting you the operator, departure date and sailing, together with the name Vaiare. Confirm the actual meeting instruction before boarding so that an arrival on Moorea does not turn into a search for a driver expecting you at a different part of the island.

Cook’s Bay appears in the scenery photograph on this page, but it is not the Vaiare ferry landing. If your accommodation or activity is elsewhere on Moorea, settle that onward movement separately from the sea crossing and notify the pickup contact if your sailing changes.

Choose a return that leaves another decision available

For a day trip, read the Moorea to Tahiti timetable as carefully as the outbound one and identify a return that fits your evening obligations. When practical, favor a plan with a later usable alternative rather than building the whole day around the final possible crossing.

If you miss the intended ferry or the operator changes it, confirm the next departure and vehicle space before heading to another company’s queue. If no workable crossing remains, revise the overnight and next-day plans first; a different timetable listing does not establish that your ticket will be accepted.

Compare like-for-like ticket totals

Build the total from the passenger categories and vehicle you actually need, then compare that total across the departures that fit your day. Do not take the lowest displayed passenger figure as the price for every traveler, or assume a passenger purchase settles all vehicle arrangements.

Check both directions, ticket validity and the selected date before paying. A flexible period for using a ticket answers a different question from available capacity on the sailing you want, so keep the ticket conditions and departure check together in your trip notes.

Planning traps

Mistakes to avoid

These are the small decisions that quietly derail an otherwise good plan.

1. Using the island name as pickup instructions

Tell your transfer contact that you arrive at Vaiare and provide the booked sailing. A destination elsewhere on Moorea is a separate onward leg.

2. Confusing ticket validity with vehicle availability

A ticket’s validity period does not remove the need to check the departure and space for your vehicle.

3. Treating ten minutes as a safe arrival plan

Aremiti’s vehicle registration closure is not its driver presentation requirement. Reach the boarding area earlier under the applicable rule.

4. Applying one company’s rules to another

Aremiti Express deadlines and ticket conditions should not be substituted for Tauati, Terevau or Vaeara’i instructions.

FAQ

Questions this guide resolves

Should I choose a ferry before arranging a Moorea pickup?
Yes, settle the intended operator and sailing first, then share those details with the pickup contact. Ask how to notify them of a change before you travel rather than assuming they will see every revised ferry booking.
Is a timetable comparison enough to bring a rental car?
No. Check the selected operator’s vehicle category and available space, and read the rental agreement separately. If the supplied car differs from the details used for the ferry booking, ask the operator how to correct the booking.
Can I use a cruise-port guide for the same trip?
Use it when your starting point and return obligation are a cruise ship. This guide covers the independent Papeete to Vaiare crossing; a cruise traveler must also satisfy the ship’s own return arrangements.
Where should I look when a departure notice is unclear?
Select the travel week and direction on the operator’s schedule, then contact that company if the departure cannot be confirmed. Do not turn an undated banner or a general directory entry into a promise of a sailing on your date.
Does an Aremiti ticket stay valid for exactly 360 days in every case?
The Aremiti site advertises 360-day validity for tickets on Aremiti 5 and 6, but the transport conditions allow special or promotional terms. Read the validity printed on the ticket you buy and ask about any exception before relying on it.
