St. Vincent and the Grenadines Beaches: Black Sand, Bequia, and the Tobago Cays

This is one country with two kinds of beach. St. Vincent itself is volcanic, with dramatic dark sand coves, while the Grenadines chain to its south holds the golden postcard sand, and the ferry ride between them is part of the trip.

Best fit

Beach travelers who want the Caribbean before the crowds find it: 32 islands and cays where the marquee sand requires a ferry or a boat day, and where the payoff is snorkeling with turtles in an uninhabited marine park.

Start here

Fly into Argyle International (SVD) on St. Vincent, give the main island a day or two, then take the roughly one hour ferry from Kingstown to Bequia and build the beach days from there.

The one splurge

A boat day to the Tobago Cays Marine Park. Five uninhabited cays behind a horseshoe reef, resident green turtles grazing at Baradal, and a beach barbecue run by boat vendors from Union Island.

Decision system

The planning sequence

Use the sequence below to decide how this should shape the trip.

BeachIslandWhy it makes the list
Tobago CaysSouthern GrenadinesThe country's crown: anchor off Baradal, snorkel the turtle watching area over seagrass, and swim ashore to bare sand cays inside the reef. Park entry is charged per person per day.
Princess Margaret BeachBequiaA calm golden crescent reached by a short water taxi or the Belmont Walkway path from Port Elizabeth; named for the princess who swam here in 1958.
Lower BayBequiaThe next cove south of Princess Margaret: wider, quieter, with beach bars in the trees and swimmable water all year.
Macaroni BeachMustiqueThe famous windward strand of the celebrity island: white sand, palm shelters, and genuine surf. Day visits by boat or SVG Air hop are possible without a villa invitation.
Villa Beach and Indian BaySt. VincentThe main island's easy swimming, golden-dark sand facing Young Island; the wilder black sand at Richmond and along the leeward coast shows the volcano's hand.
1Fly into Argyle International Airport (SVD), which has direct service from Miami and the northeastern US on several carriers plus regional LIAT and interCaribbean links.
2Use the Kingstown to Bequia ferry, about an hour on Bequia Express or Admiralty Transport, as the backbone; onward Grenadines ferries and SVG Air island hops reach Canouan, Mustique, and Union Island.
3Book the Tobago Cays as a full day boat tour from Bequia or Union Island unless you are sailing; the park is uninhabited and everything, including lunch, arrives by boat.
4Aim for December through May for the driest weather; the islands sit south in the hurricane belt but June through November still carries wet season storms.

Why Bequia is the base

Bequia puts the best beaches on foot

Port Elizabeth wraps around Admiralty Bay, and the Belmont Walkway runs along the waterfront to a headland path that drops onto Princess Margaret Beach, with Lower Bay one cove further. No taxis, no schedules: two of the country's best beaches sit a shoreline stroll from the ferry dock, which is why most Grenadines trips quietly become Bequia trips.

Know the two sands

St. Vincent is a young volcanic island, so its beaches run charcoal to bronze: dramatic at Richmond and the leeward coves, gentler at Villa Beach and Indian Bay near the hotels. The Grenadines are older, reef fringed, and golden. Neither is a consolation prize, but plan photography and expectations accordingly.

Do the Tobago Cays properly

The marine park charges a small per person daily fee collected on the water, and the turtle area at Baradal is buoyed off for swimmers. Tours from Bequia make a long, brilliant day; from Union Island the run is shorter. Sailors anchor behind Horseshoe Reef and the beach barbecue boats find everyone by lunchtime.

Use the ferries like a local

Bequia Express and Admiralty Transport run multiple Kingstown to Bequia crossings daily, and a slower cargo and passenger service continues down island. Ferries cost a fraction of flights, and the deck views of the chain are the free excursion nobody advertises.

Mind the swimming conditions

Leeward (western) beaches are calm nearly year round; windward beaches like Macaroni carry real surf and no lifeguards anywhere in the country. Swim where locals swim, keep reef shoes for the shallows, and treat currents at uninhabited cays with respect.

Planning traps

Mistakes to avoid

These are the small decisions that quietly derail an otherwise good plan.

1. Judging the country by the airport island alone

Travelers who never leave St. Vincent see only dark sand and conclude the brochures lied. The golden beaches live an hour south by ferry: the country's beach identity is in the Grenadines.

2. Day tripping the Tobago Cays from St. Vincent

It reads close on the map but it is a long open water run. Base on Bequia or Union Island for the boat day, or you spend the daylight commuting.

3. Expecting resort infrastructure everywhere

Outside a handful of hotels, these are beaches with a bar at most. Carry cash in EC dollars, water, and sun cover, and treat the simplicity as the point.

FAQ

Common planning questions

Does St. Vincent have white sand beaches?
The main island's sand is volcanic, running black to golden brown. For white and golden sand, take the ferry south: Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, and the Tobago Cays carry the pale reef sand the Caribbean is famous for.
How do you get to the Tobago Cays?
By boat only. Day tours run from Bequia and Union Island, and charter yachts anchor inside Horseshoe Reef. The cays are uninhabited and protected as a marine park with a small daily entry fee.
Is Bequia worth it for beaches alone?
Yes. Princess Margaret Beach and Lower Bay are both walkable from the Port Elizabeth ferry dock via the Belmont Walkway, and the hour long crossing from Kingstown makes Bequia the easiest golden sand in the country.
Can you visit Mustique without staying there?
Day visits are possible by boat tour or SVG Air hop, and Macaroni Beach is the target. The island is privately managed, so check current visitor arrangements before building a day around it.
When is the best time to visit St. Vincent and the Grenadines?
December through May is the dry season with the calmest seas for ferries and boat days. The islands sit at the southern edge of the hurricane belt, but June through November remains wetter and stormier.
