St. Thomas to St. John Ferry: Red Hook, Charlotte Amalie, or Car Barge

St. Thomas and St. John are linked by several services that do different jobs. Most walk on passengers use Red Hook or a less frequent Charlotte Amalie or Crown Bay option to Cruz Bay. Vehicles use private car barges between the Red Hook cargo terminal and Enighed Pond. Choosing the mode and both terminals before reading times prevents the most expensive mixups.

Most passenger trips

Use the frequent walk on passenger route between Red Hook and the Loredon L. Boynes Dock in Cruz Bay, subject to the current VIPA schedule.

Other passenger options

Charlotte Amalie and Crown Bay passenger services can reduce a St. Thomas ground transfer for some travelers, but their current schedules are more limited and seasonal.

Taking a vehicle

Use a private car barge from the Red Hook cargo terminal to the Enighed Pond vehicle and cargo facility. Do not drive to the Cruz Bay passenger dock.

Passenger dock and vehicle port are different

Cruz Bay is for walk on passenger arrivals, while Enighed Pond handles car barges

A Red Hook departure can still lead to two different St. John facilities. Match the vessel type to the correct terminal before asking a driver for the port or following a map pin.

Car barge tickets are operator specific and a reservation does not guarantee a place on a particular loading. Passenger ferry travelers should follow the current passenger schedule and its separate arrival guidance.

Choose passenger or vehicle service first

A walk on ferry and a car barge are not two fare classes on one boat. They use different operating systems, boarding procedures, St. John terminals, and ticket rules.

Walk on passengers generally travel to Cruz Bay. Vehicles use private barges to Enighed Pond.

Decide whether a vehicle is truly needed, then verify the current barge operator, vehicle category, ticket terms, and loading instructions before purchase.

Use Red Hook to Cruz Bay for the core passenger route

VIPA and the Virgin Islands Department of Public Works identify Red Hook to Cruz Bay as the frequent passenger connection. Current 2026 VIPA information includes a temporary off season schedule, so a remembered hourly pattern may not match the exact day.

Check the live schedule close to travel and arrive under the current instruction. The St. Thomas passenger terminal and cargo barge area are related by place name but should not be treated as the same check in point.

Tell the driver that the group is walking onto the passenger ferry.

Treat Charlotte Amalie as a limited passenger option

Passenger service also operates between Charlotte Amalie and Cruz Bay, but VIPA marks the schedule as subject to seasonal change. It may reduce the ground transfer for a traveler already near the waterfront, yet limited departures can create a poor day trip connection.

Confirm that the sailing runs on the exact date and identify the correct Charlotte Amalie marine facility. Compare the full door to door journey with Red Hook, including ground time, waiting, luggage, and the available return.

Check Crown Bay as its own passenger service

VIPA also lists passenger boat service between Crown Bay and Cruz Bay. Do not merge it into the Charlotte Amalie timetable or assume the same operator, ticket, or luggage rule.

Confirm the exact St. Thomas dock, named service, date, fare, and return before choosing it. If the connection begins with another timed arrival, keep a Red Hook ground transfer branch because a limited sailing may not recover from a delay.

Send vehicles to Enighed Pond

VIPA says private car ferry companies operate between the Urman V. Fredericks Marine Terminal in Red Hook and the Theovald Moorehead Dock and Terminal at Enighed Pond on St. John.

Enighed Pond is the cargo and vehicle facility, not the Cruz Bay passenger dock. Use the operator's directions for the correct barge line and arrive with the driver, vehicle, and payment materials prepared.

On St. John, plan the road from Enighed Pond rather than routing from the passenger ferry pin. This distinction also matters for pickups meeting an arriving vehicle.

Keep each car barge ticket with its operator

VIPA states that car ferry tickets are not interchangeable among the private barge companies. A return ticket therefore creates an operator decision, not a general barge pass.

VIPA also warns that buying online does not guarantee a spot on a specific departure and that loading is first come and first load. Check the current operator schedule, line procedure, vehicle category, and return terms.

Arrive with enough margin for the queue. Avoid building a flight or nonrefundable tour around the final practical barge unless a vehicle storage or overnight alternative exists.

Build the St. Thomas connection door to door

The chosen St. Thomas origin and ferry terminal are separate trip points. Add the ground transfer, terminal arrival margin, ticket handling, boarding, crossing, St. John arrival, and final local transfer.

Do not select a tightly timed ferry using only a map estimate. A traveler arriving through another timed service should verify the final practical sailing and keep a St. Thomas overnight branch when the same day sequence lacks recovery room.

Handle luggage as a separate fare and movement task

VIPA currently lists a luggage or box charge for the core Red Hook passenger operators, while other services can use their own terms. Check the current VIPA schedule or named operator for bags, coolers, bicycles, strollers, pets, and mobility equipment.

Keep identification, medications, and valuables controlled during loading. At each ground transfer, confirm that every bag moves with the traveler before the vehicle departs.

Protect the return and disruption branch

The passenger and vehicle networks can change for weather, mechanical, seasonal, or operational reasons. Save the preferred return and one earlier alternative.

Recheck VIPA and the operator before leaving the island activity. A Charlotte Amalie or Crown Bay outbound does not guarantee that the same route will be the best return, but switching terminals changes the St. Thomas ground plan.

For a car, ticket restrictions may limit the return operator. For a flight, sleep on St. Thomas when the same day water and road sequence leaves no responsible recovery margin.

Keep the routes clear without conflating services

This guide covers the bidirectional St. Thomas and St. John transport decision across passenger ferries and car barges. It does not become a destination guide for either island, a cruise port guide, or a static timetable archive.

The guide still keeps the subroutes clear: Red Hook passenger terminal to Cruz Bay, Charlotte Amalie or Crown Bay passenger service to Cruz Bay, and Red Hook cargo terminal to Enighed Pond for vehicles. Use linked Deep Arrival pages for island activities and lodging.

Use VIPA, DPW, and current operators for service decisions.

Planning traps

Mistakes to avoid

These are the small decisions that quietly derail an otherwise good plan.

1. Driving to the Cruz Bay passenger dock

Vehicles arrive at the Enighed Pond car ferry and cargo terminal.

2. Treating Red Hook passenger and cargo check in as one queue

Confirm the exact terminal and vessel type before arrival.

3. Assuming a barge ticket works on every operator

VIPA says car ferry tickets are not interchangeable.

4. Assuming an online car barge booking reserves a place

VIPA says online purchase does not guarantee a specific loading.

5. Copying an hourly passenger timetable

VIPA currently displays a temporary 2026 off season pattern and seasonal alternatives.
