What matters first
Olana is both a free 250 acre landscape and a ticketed house and tour experience. Choose the access layer before planning the long viewshed route.
Ticket and booking
Ridge Road and Early Years cost $12, Artist’s House Main Floor $20, Explore at Your Own Pace $25, Electric Vehicle Tour $40 and the two hour Combo $45. Reserve early, arrive 30 minutes before a scheduled tour, and leave 30 minutes between separately booked experiences because starts vary across the site.
Hours and current closure
The park is open daily 8am to sunset, and the listed tour season runs May 19 through November 2 with tours Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm; October 12 has a special Monday opening. On October 10 and 11, house entry is only via Explore at Your Own Pace, the self guided product closes at 4:30pm, and the special exhibition closes October 25.
Route, arrival and access
The Main Floor tour lasts 45 minutes, landscape walks 60 minutes and the Combo 2 hours; Amtrak reaches Hudson followed by a taxi, but the operator says a personal car is currently best. Ridge Road is one mile over unpaved roads and is not ADA accessible, so choose the house and paved core for a shorter access aware visit or add the lake and farm for the full landscape.
Decision system
The planning sequence
Choose the ticketed interior, the free landscape or both, then set the route around parking, surface and time.
Choose house or landscape
Olana’s view is a route decision
The accessible house and paved core make a shorter visit, while Ridge Road, lake and farm turn the day into a landscape walk.
Inside the house, amateur still photos must be flash-free and recording gear, tripods and selfie sticks stay out. Outdoor photo shoots and drones require permits.
Choose the access layer first
The park is free from 8am to sunset, while House access is ticket only. Outside October 10 and 11, start with the $20 Main Floor product, the $12 landscape walk or the $45 Combo; on those dates, use Explore at Your Own Pace for house entry.
Use the accessible house plan
The Frederic Church Center provides ticket check-in, accessible facilities and orientation before the paved approach. The 45 minute, fully ADA accessible Main Floor ticket includes the Persian inspired house and Artist’s Studio, joining Church's work space to his collection and architecture.
Build the short landscape route
From the Center, read the Historic House exterior as Church's Persian inspired focal point, then use Crown Hill for an elevated view and the Mingled Flower Garden as a cultivated garden room. This free route remains outside; the house and Artist’s Studio require a ticket.
Treat Ridge Road as a separate surface choice
The Ridge Road walk lasts 60 minutes and covers about one mile over unpaved roads. It is the signature viewshed route, but it is not ADA accessible and needs a separate mobility decision.
Add the early landscape layer
The Early Years route reaches Cosy Cottage, the family's first home on the property, then the farm complex that supported food production. Church transformed wet ground into Olana Lake, making water part of the designed landscape rather than a natural backdrop.
Use the full day route carefully
The two hour Combo joins Ridge Road and the House. Add the Wagon House for the estate's transport and education layer, then use South Road to see how a carriage route frames the Hudson and Catskill viewshed.
Plan parking and transit honestly
Free parking is available at the Frederic Church Center, Wagon House and near the Shop. Amtrak to Hudson needs a taxi, and the operator says personal car is best because local taxi and rideshare supply is limited.
Keep Church’s identity attached to the landscape
Frederic and Isabel Church shaped Olana from 1860 to 1900 as a 250 acre living landscape. The Moorish and Persian inspired house, farm, lake, roads and viewshed are one designed work.
Respect surfaces and stairs
Carriage roads can be loose, steep and uneven. The main floor is the access aware choice, while the special exhibition and upper house require stairs.
Close with the right day shape
Choose free grounds for flexibility, the main floor for an accessible house focus, or the Combo for a full route. Confirm ticket inventory and conditions before setting the day.
Planning traps
Mistakes to avoid
These errors turn a flexible landscape day into a missed tour or an unsuitable surface plan.
The park is free, but Historic House access is ticket only. Reserve the appropriate house product.
Tours start at multiple locations and the operator recommends 30 minutes between products. Keep the transfer in the schedule.
The one mile Ridge Road walk uses unpaved roads and is not ADA accessible. Choose the main floor or paved core for a different plan.
Amtrak reaches Hudson, but the operator says personal car is best because taxi, Uber and Lyft availability is limited.
The operator recommends arriving 30 minutes before a scheduled tour for parking and check in.
Indoor amateur still photos are allowed without flash. Audio or video recording, tripods, selfie sticks, lighting and specialized camera gear are prohibited.
