What matters first

Set the selected date, last admission and climb before you decide whether the museum, core sanctuary or full two-sanctuary route comes first.

Ticket and booking

The full ticket is €20, or €10 reduced, and includes the Archaeological Site of Delphi and the Archaeological Museum of Delphi. The official Hellenic Heritage booking portal is tickets.hh.gr, and free-admission days follow the published state schedule.

Current hours and last admission

For September 16 to 30, 2026, the Hellenic Heritage Delphi page lists 8am to 7pm daily with last admission 20 minutes before closing, at 6:40pm. The museum record updated September 8 still lists a summer Tuesday exception of 10am to 5pm, so verify a Tuesday date before travel.

Route, transit and access

The Sanctuary of Apollo rises across terraces from the Roman Agora to the Temple, Theatre and Stadium, while the road separates it from Athena Pronaia and the Tholos. Delphi is about 15 minutes on foot from the village, KTEL buses serve Athens or Patras, and a special vehicle to the Temple of Apollo needs seven days of notice.

Decision system

The planning sequence

Choose the route that protects the last admission window and matches the mountain climb, museum time and access support you can arrange.

Museum-firstStart with the Charioteer, Sphinx and treasury finds before the open-air climb.Choose this in heat, rain or when the objects need to explain the stones.
Core Apollo sanctuaryFollow the Roman Agora, Sacred Way, treasuries, Temple of Apollo and Theatre, adding the Stadium only if the upper climb fits.Choose this for a focused first visit with a protected return to the village.
Full sanctuary routeAllow an editorial four-hour block for the museum, main sanctuary, Stadium, Athena Pronaia, Tholos and access buffers.Choose this when you can handle terraces and want both ancient sanctuaries.
Lower sanctuary add-onTreat Athena Pronaia, the Tholos and the Gymnasium as a separate lower route because the modern road divides them from Apollo's sanctuary.Choose this when the lower monuments matter more than a longer museum stop.
Mobility requestNotify the Ephorate at least seven days ahead about the special vehicle to the Temple of Apollo, then confirm which terraces and high stops remain feasible.Choose this when a full step-free route cannot be assumed.
Athens or village arrivalThe Hellenic Heritage page lists about three hours from Athens by car, KTEL buses from Athens or Patras and a 15-minute walk from the Delphi settlement.Choose a village base when you want more control over the last admission and return.

2Buy the €20 combined ticket through the official Hellenic Heritage portal or confirm ticket-office availability
3Arrange the special vehicle at least seven days ahead if mobility support is needed
4Choose village walk, KTEL bus or car arrival and leave a return buffer
5Start with the museum or Roman Agora according to heat, weather and interpretation needs
6Follow the Sacred Way through the treasuries to the Temple of Apollo
7Add the Theatre and Stadium only while the climb and last admission remain protected
8Cross to the lower Athena Pronaia sanctuary and Tholos only if the full route fits

From object to mountain

Let the museum and the Sacred Way explain each other

Delphi works as a paired visit: the museum holds the objects and the sanctuary places them back into the mountain terraces. Choose the route depth before you climb, because the Theatre, Stadium and lower sanctuary each add distance beyond the Temple of Apollo.

Keep the last admission, access request and camera rules visible while the site changes from a museum sequence into an exposed mountain walk.

Lock the combined ticket

The €20 full ticket and €10 reduced ticket cover both the archaeological site and the museum. The museum is not a separate optional add-on in the current Hellenic Heritage listing, so protect time for both when you buy.

Use the current September date band

For September 16 to 30, the Hellenic Heritage Delphi page lists 8am to 7pm daily with last admission 20 minutes before closing. That gives a 6:40pm last admission in this band; check the selected-date page before travel.

Resolve the Tuesday schedule difference

The Directorate museum record updated September 8 lists summer hours of 8am to 8pm with Tuesday 10am to 5pm, while the Hellenic Heritage date-band page displays daily seasonal bands. A Tuesday itinerary needs a direct check before departure.

Start with the museum when the objects should lead

The Charioteer, Sphinx of the Naxians, treasury sculptures and votive offerings turn the sanctuary into a legible sequence. The museum also lists an elevator, ramp, lift, Braille signs, tactile material and accessible toilets.

Read the Roman Agora and Sacred Way

The Roman Agora sets the later public context before the Sacred Way climbs through the treasuries. Each treasury adds a city-state voice to a sanctuary that drew offerings from across the Greek world.

Protect the Temple of Apollo terrace

The Temple is the route's interpretive center, where the oracle, Pythia and Delphic maxims meet the surviving architecture. Stop here before deciding whether the Theatre and Stadium climb still fits your body and closing window.

Use the Theatre and Stadium as an upper-route choice

The Theatre adds the view and performance setting above the temple, while the Stadium adds the Pythian Games and the highest main-site endpoint. They are valuable named stops, but their height makes them a poor late addition after the last admission pressure starts.

Treat Athena Pronaia as a second sanctuary

The modern road separates the lower Athena Pronaia sanctuary from the Apollo precinct. The Tholos and Gymnasium add a different architectural and athletic story, so cross only after checking the route and remaining time.

Build the transit buffer around the village

Hellenic Heritage lists about 15 minutes on foot from the settlement, five minutes by car and KTEL buses from Athens or Patras. A village start or overnight base makes it easier to protect the ticket and return without turning a long Athens day into a last-entry gamble.

Arrange access before you arrive

A special vehicle can serve visitors with mobility impairments up to the Temple of Apollo when the Ephorate receives notice at least seven days ahead. That support does not make every terrace, Theatre or Stadium section step-free, so ask for the exact day route.

Keep photography within the rules

The Ministry permits simple handheld amateur photography without flash when it is not for professional use. Flash and holographic photography are prohibited, and professional, commercial or aerial work requires the relevant permission and fees.

Planning traps

Mistakes to avoid

These choices can turn a combined ticket into a rushed climb or a partial route.

1. Treating the museum as optional

The current €20 ticket includes the Archaeological Museum and site together. A site-only plan leaves out the Charioteer, Sphinx and treasury finds that give the ruins their context.

2. Using a generic summer closing time

September 16 to 30 has a listed 7pm closing and 6:40pm last admission on the Hellenic Heritage date-band page. Refresh the selected day because the museum record displays a different Tuesday summer schedule.

3. Leaving the Stadium and lower sanctuary until the final minutes

The Stadium is the upper endpoint of the Apollo route, while Athena Pronaia and the Tholos are separated by the modern road. Choose them before the climb and keep the last admission protected.

4. Assuming the full route is step-free

The official access page offers a special vehicle to the Temple of Apollo after seven days of notice, but it does not promise every terrace, Theatre or Stadium section. Ask for the exact current path.

5. Arriving without a mountain plan

Delphi has terraces, exposed stone surfaces and limited shade. Carry water, wear secure shoes and choose the village walk, KTEL connection or car route before you commit to a full day.

6. Using flash or commercial gear as ordinary visitor photography

The Ministry rule allows a simple handheld amateur camera without flash for non-professional use. Flash, holographic photography and professional or aerial work require the appropriate restriction or permission.
