Oahu Itinerary: 5 Days That Get Past Waikiki

Five days on Oahu is the sweet spot: enough to see why the island is more than Waikiki without renting a car you never park. Oahu splits into four day-sized pieces, the south shore with Diamond Head and the beach you flew for, Pearl Harbor and downtown's royal palace, the windward coast's swimming water, and the North Shore circuit, and this plan gives each its day plus a flex fifth. The catch is bureaucratic, not geographic: Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head, and the USS Arizona Memorial all sit behind timed reservations now, and the plan lives or dies on booking them before you fly.

Best fit

First-timers with five full days on the ground who want the signature sights, real swimming beaches, and one wild coast, all from a single hotel base. Waikiki works best as that base: you tolerate its crowds in exchange for walkable dinners, the 25-minute airport run, and a central launch point for every day of this plan.

Start here

Set three alarms before you pack. USS Arizona Memorial tickets open on recreation.gov eight weeks out with a next-day batch at 3 p.m. Hawaii time; Hanauma Bay reservations drop at 7 a.m. Hawaii time exactly two days ahead and vanish in minutes; Diamond Head requires an out-of-state visitor reservation through the state parks system. Book those three, then rent the car for days three and four only.

Do not assume

Do not assume you can walk up to anything anymore: Hanauma Bay is closed Mondays and Tuesdays and capped daily, Diamond Head turns away unreserved visitors, and summer Arizona tickets evaporate. Do not assume Waikiki hotel parking is cheap, overnight rates run high enough that a five-day rental only makes sense if you drive daily. And the North Shore's famous surf is a winter show; summer water there is often flat and swimmable.

Decision system

The planning sequence

Use the sequence below to decide how this should shape the trip.

DayThe shape of itAnchors
Day 1: South shore landingWaikiki Beach morning to shake off the flight, Duke Kahanamoku statue and beach boys culture, then a late-afternoon Diamond Head summit hike on your timed slot for the crater-rim view of the coastWaikiki Beach, Diamond Head State Monument, Kapiolani Park
Day 2: Pearl Harbor and downtownUSS Arizona Memorial on your reserved slot first, the Bowfin submarine or Aviation Museum if you want the full morning, then downtown for Iolani Palace, the only royal palace on US soil, and King Kamehameha's statueUSS Arizona Memorial, Pearl Harbor National Memorial, Iolani Palace, Kawaiahao Church
Day 3: Windward water dayHanauma Bay snorkeling on your 7 a.m.-won reservation, then over the Pali Highway to Kailua and Lanikai for the afternoon, the twin offshore islets and powder sand that headline every Oahu beach rankingHanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Nuuanu Pali Lookout, Kailua Beach, Lanikai Beach
Day 4: North Shore circuitCounterclockwise loop: Haleiwa town for breakfast and shave ice, Laniakea's turtles, Waimea Bay, Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach, garlic shrimp trucks in Kahuku, then back down the windward side or the H-2Haleiwa, Waimea Bay, Ehukai Beach Park (Pipeline), Kahuku shrimp trucks
Day 5: The flex dayPick one: Kualoa Ranch's movie-valley tours booked ahead, the Polynesian Cultural Center's full afternoon-evening program, a Koko Head crater stairs sunrise, or simply the best beach you found repeatedKualoa Ranch, Polynesian Cultural Center, Koko Head, or repeat Lanikai
Getting in from the airportHonolulu's airport sits about 25 minutes from Waikiki by car or shuttle in normal traffic; pre-booked shuttles and rideshare both work, and the rental car only needs to start when the driving days doDaniel K. Inouye International (HNL), Nimitz Highway, H-1
Getting aroundRent a car only for days three and four; Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, and downtown run fine on rideshare and TheBus, and skipping two nights of hotel parking usually pays for the rental days themselvesTheBus, Biki bikeshare, H-1, Pali Highway, Kamehameha Highway
Reservations that matterUSS Arizona at eight weeks and 3 p.m. HST day-before; Hanauma Bay at 7 a.m. HST two days out, closed Monday and Tuesday; Diamond Head out-of-state slots through Hawaii state parks; Kualoa Ranch tours days to weeks ahead in summerrecreation.gov, gostateparks.hawaii.gov, Hanauma Bay reservation portal
Money and timingBudget for reservation and entry fees on the marquee sights plus resort and parking fees in Waikiki; mid-April through early June and September through mid-December bring thinner crowds and easier bookings than summer and ChristmasResort fees, non-resident entry fees, shoulder seasons
1Day 1: Waikiki morning, Diamond Head timed hike late afternoon, sunset back on the sand.
2Day 2: USS Arizona Memorial on your slot, Pearl Harbor's other ships if you booked the add-ons, Iolani Palace and downtown after lunch.
3Day 3: Hanauma Bay snorkel on your reservation, Pali Lookout on the drive over, Kailua and Lanikai until the light goes gold.
4Day 4: The North Shore loop, Haleiwa to Kahuku, turtles, Pipeline, and shrimp trucks included.
5Day 5: The one you booked ahead, Kualoa, the Cultural Center, or Koko Head, or the beach that won you over, again.

How this itinerary thinks

Oahu punishes zigzagging the same way any island with one ring road does. The plan holds you to one coast per day: south, harbor-and-downtown, windward, north, then a flex day for whichever reservation you actually won. Jet lag from the mainland is an asset, you will be up at dawn anyway, and dawn is when Hanauma Bay's parking lot, the Koko Head stairs, and the North Shore's beach parks are at their best. Evenings always land you back in Waikiki, where dinner is a walk, not a drive.

The reservation game, played correctly

Three sights gate this trip. USS Arizona Memorial tickets are free but claimed on recreation.gov, released eight weeks ahead with a same-week batch at 3 p.m. Hawaii time the day before; summer slots go fast both times. Hanauma Bay opens its non-resident reservations at 7 a.m. Hawaii time exactly two days out, caps daily visitors, and closes Mondays and Tuesdays entirely. Diamond Head requires out-of-state visitors to reserve entry and parking through the state parks portal. Set phone alarms in Hawaii time for all three before you leave home.

Waikiki, defended

It is crowded, built-up, and occasionally kitsch, and it is still the correct base for a first five-day trip. The beach itself is a genuinely good swimming and surf-lesson beach, the airport run is short, and no other base lets you do three of five days without a car. The move is to use Waikiki as a harbor: dawn departures beat both the traffic and the heat, and by the time you are back for the evening, the day-trip crowds heading the other way are the ones suffering.

The windward day is the swimming day

Hanauma Bay is the morning: a flooded volcanic crater where the reef starts in waist-deep water, which is why it is capped, fee-gated, and closed two days a week to let the fish recover. Take the reservation seriously and the snorkeling repays it. Then drive the Pali Highway, stop at the lookout where Kamehameha won the island, and give the afternoon to Kailua and Lanikai. Lanikai's powder sand and the Mokulua islets are the screensaver; parking is neighborhood street spaces, so arrive with patience or bike from Kailua.

North Shore, the honest version

In winter, roughly November through February, the North Shore is the surf capital of the world: Waimea Bay holds giants, Pipeline breaks over shallow reef a stone's throw from the sand, and spectating is free. In summer the same water often goes flat and family-swimmable, which surprises visitors expecting the highlight reel year-round. The loop works in any season, Haleiwa's shave ice, sea turtles hauled out at Laniakea, the Kahuku shrimp trucks, but match your expectations to the calendar, and never turn your back on winter shore break.

Planning traps

Mistakes to avoid

These are the small decisions that quietly derail an otherwise good plan.

1. Arriving without the three reservations

Hanauma Bay, Diamond Head, and the USS Arizona all turn away walk-ups when slots are gone, and summer slots go. Ten minutes of booking discipline weeks ahead is the difference between the itinerary and a week of substitutions.

2. Renting a car for all five days

Waikiki hotel parking charges resort-city rates every night while the car sits still on your city days. Rent for the windward and North Shore days only and the math flips in your favor.

3. Doing the North Shore as a half day

The loop reads short on a map and never is: one lane of Kamehameha Highway, beach stops that stretch, and shrimp-truck lines. Give it the full day or skip it clean rather than sitting in the afternoon return traffic annoyed.

FAQ

Common planning questions

Is 5 days enough for Oahu?
Yes, five days covers the four distinct pieces of the island, south shore, Pearl Harbor and downtown, the windward beaches, and the North Shore, with a flex day left over. It is not enough to add a second island without gutting this one; save Maui or Kauai for their own trip.
Do you need reservations for Hanauma Bay?
Non-residents do, and they are the trip's hardest ticket: released at 7 a.m. Hawaii time exactly two days ahead and often gone in minutes. The preserve is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, charges a non-resident entry fee, and caps daily visitors. Locals with Hawaii ID enter free without the online scramble.
Do you need a reservation for Diamond Head?
Out-of-state visitors do, for both entry and parking, booked through the Hawaii state parks reservation system. Slots are far easier to get than Hanauma Bay's, but the trailhead does turn away unreserved visitors, so book when your dates firm up. The summit hike is short, steep, stairs-and-tunnel, and worth it.
How do you get USS Arizona Memorial tickets?
Through recreation.gov: free aside from a small processing fee, released eight weeks in advance, with an additional batch at 3 p.m. Hawaii time the day before each date. The Pearl Harbor grounds, museums, and other ships work without the Arizona slot, but the memorial itself is boat-access on timed tickets only.
Do you need a rental car on Oahu?
Not for all five days. Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, and downtown run comfortably on rideshare and TheBus; the windward day and the North Shore loop genuinely need a car. Renting for just those two days usually beats five days of hotel parking charges.
When is the best time to do this itinerary?
Mid-April through early June and September through mid-December: thinner crowds, easier reservations, and softer hotel pricing. Winter brings the giant North Shore surf if that is your headline; summer brings the calmest swimming water everywhere, including, surprisingly, the North Shore itself.
