Four day route plan

Florida Keys Road Trip from Miami to Key West

Use four days for a one way Miami to Key West drive: Key Largo first, Islamorada and Marathon next, then Bahia Honda and the Lower Keys before a final Key West day. Treat the corridor as a sequence of stops, not a nonstop transfer.

Protect the first night

Drive from greater Miami to Key Largo and stop adding attractions when traffic threatens a comfortable arrival.

Limit transfer days

Carry no more than two anchor stops between overnight bases. Meals, parking, and check in still consume the day.

Let live conditions win

A material FL511 disruption or Monroe County instruction overrides the planned route immediately.

Decision system

The planning sequence

Use the sequence below to decide how this should shape the trip.

Day 1: Miami to Key LargoUpper Keys transfer with one arrival-day anchorKey Largo base; cut the optional Upper Keys stop first
Day 2: Key Largo to MarathonTwo-stop transfer through IslamoradaIslamorada plus Marathon; sleep in Marathon
Day 3: Marathon to Key WestTwo-stop transfer through the Lower KeysBahia Honda plus one Lower Keys stop; sleep in Key West
Day 4: Key West base dayLocal movement rather than a transfer dayChoose one morning anchor and leave the return drive for a separate plan
1Check FL511 and Monroe County before leaving Miami
2Keep each transfer day to two anchor stops
3Protect the overnight arrival margin
4Cut optional stops from the end of the day
5Build the return to Miami as its own travel day

Corridor reality

Seven Mile Bridge is part of the route, not a timing promise

The Overseas Highway concentrates the road trip onto one long island corridor. The bridge image explains the geography, while FL511 controls the current incident and construction check.

Use live road conditions instead of a fixed wheel-time promise, and keep the stop count low enough to absorb parking, meals, and congestion.

Set the route assumptions before booking

This plan starts in greater Miami, ends in Key West, and uses four days with three overnight transitions. It assumes a one way progression, no active evacuation instruction, and no material FL511 closure on the Overseas Highway.

Day 1: Miami to Key Largo

Give the arrival day to the Upper Keys and stop after one meaningful Key Largo activity. If the northern corridor is delayed, skip the optional stop and protect check in rather than carrying the delay into dinner and the next morning.

Day 2: Key Largo through Islamorada to Marathon

Use Islamorada as the first anchor and Marathon as the second. The things to do in Key Largo guide can add detail to the prior day, while the mile by mile Florida Keys orientation helps select one stop without turning the transfer into a list.

Day 3: Marathon through Bahia Honda to Key West

Leave Marathon with enough margin for Bahia Honda and one Lower Keys stop before Key West. If FL511 delay erodes the arrival window, cut the later optional stop and continue to the overnight base.

Day 4: Keep the car mostly parked in Key West

Use the final day for a compact Key West plan instead of another long transfer. Pick one morning anchor, one flexible afternoon choice such as the Key West beaches, and keep the evening close to the lodging base.

Use Card Sound Road only as a checked alternative

Card Sound Road can offer a different northern entry when it is open and useful, but it does not bypass the whole Overseas Highway. Compare the current FL511 picture before choosing it and rejoin the main corridor with the same stop limit.

Make weather and emergency guidance the stop rule

Tropical weather and Monroe County emergency instructions can invalidate every suggested timing band. If the county issues an evacuation instruction or FL511 shows a material closure, stop using the schedule and follow the controlling authority.

Treat the Key West return as a new travel day

Do not turn the return to Miami into a fixed drive time or place a tight flight after it. The same single corridor, incident exposure, meals, fuel, and rental return can consume the buffer you thought you had.

Planning traps

Mistakes to avoid

These are the small decisions that quietly derail an otherwise good plan.

1. Counting only wheel time

Stops, parking, meals, fuel, and check in turn a short mileage day into a full travel day.

2. Adding a third anchor stop

The stop cap is what keeps the next overnight arrival intact when traffic changes.

3. Treating Card Sound Road as a full bypass

It changes only the northern approach and still requires a current condition check.

4. Scheduling a tight flight after Key West

The return uses the same incident sensitive corridor and needs its own buffer.

FAQ

Common planning questions

How many days do you need for a Florida Keys road trip?
Four days supports three paced transfer days plus one Key West base day without turning every stop into a rush.
How many stops should you plan each day?
Use no more than two anchor stops on a transfer day, then cut optional stops if traffic threatens the overnight arrival margin.
Is the Overseas Highway the only road through the Keys?
It is the essential road corridor through the island chain, so incidents and peak congestion can materially change the day plan.
Can Card Sound Road replace the Overseas Highway?
It can be a checked alternate for part of the northern approach, but it does not bypass the full Keys corridor.
What conditions override this itinerary?
An active Monroe County evacuation instruction or a material FL511 closure overrides the schedule.
