The peninsula is the walkable core
South of Broad, the French Quarter, and Upper King sit on the historic peninsula. Mount Pleasant, Folly Beach, and West Ashley work better when you have a car or planned rides.

South of Broad and The Battery
Grand antebellum homes, garden walls, and harbor views at the tip of the peninsula.

- Walk the lower peninsula and Rainbow Row; ride or walk to King Street.

- Postcard old Charleston, calm and residential at night
Skip if you want nightlife and dining at your doorstep, or you are driving and want easy, cheap parking.
French Quarter and the Waterfront
Cobblestone lanes, galleries, and the Pineapple Fountain at Waterfront Park.

- First timers who want to walk everywhere, couples, art and dining
- Around
- Walk to King Street, the City Market, and the harbor in minutes.
- Feel
- Historic core, lively by day and calmer than Upper King at night
Skip if you want a beach base, or you want a large resort rather than a historic block.
Upper King Street
The dining and bar strip, with shops, music, and the busiest evenings in town.
- Best for
- Food and nightlife first trips, walkers, younger groups
- Around
- Walk the peninsula; near the visitor center and the City Market.
- Feel
- Energetic and modern, busy and loud on weekend nights
Skip if you are a light sleeper who wants quiet, or you want a residential or beach feel.
Mount Pleasant
Waterfront suburbs across the Ravenel Bridge, with Shem Creek and easy beach access.

- Families, longer stays, better value with easy beach access
- Around
- A car helps; plan about ten to fifteen minutes to downtown or the beaches.
- Feel
- Relaxed and local, with marsh, creek, and bridge views
Skip if you want to walk into the historic district, or you do not want to drive each day.
Folly Beach
A laid back surf town on the Atlantic, about twenty to twenty five minutes from downtown.

- Beach lovers, surfers, couples who want sand over sights
- Around
- A car is needed; downtown is a drive, not a walk.
- Feel
- Quirky and easygoing, with salt air and a fishing pier
Skip if your trip is centered on the historic district, or you want walkable dining and museums.
West Ashley
A residential mainland area just over the Ashley River, with local dining and green space.

- Value, longer stays, a quieter base near downtown

- A car helps; plan about ten minutes to the peninsula over the river.

- Local and low key, with parks, bridges, and neighborhood dining

Getting around
How your base changes each day
Charleston looks compact on a map, but the peninsula, bridges, beaches, and airport pull trips in different directions.
The airport sits northwest of the peninsula
Keep early flights simple by staying on the peninsula, in Mount Pleasant, or in West Ashley with easy road access. Beach bases add more moving parts on departure morning.
The historic peninsula is the car-light choice
The French Quarter, South of Broad, and Upper King keep many restaurants, sights, and harbor walks close. That is why first timers usually start downtown.
The beach layer needs a drive
Folly Beach is its own base, not a casual walk from downtown. Mount Pleasant makes Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island easier while keeping downtown reachable by car.
Driving changes the best answer
Peninsula parking is tighter than mainland parking. If you are driving daily, Mount Pleasant or West Ashley can be calmer than a central historic block.
