The famous cove

Maya Bay, reopened on the reef's terms

Maya Bay is the most famous beach in Thailand because of a movie, and the most instructive one because of what happened next. Crowds of up to 6,000 visitors a day so damaged the cove that Thailand closed it completely in 2018, replanted coral, and let the blacktip reef sharks return. Since reopening in 2022, visits are capped, timed, and dry: you enter from a floating dock at the back of Phi Phi Leh and walk to the sand, but swimming in the bay is banned. It is still worth the trip, just as a look rather than a swim.

Railay and Phra Nang: the karst postcard

Railay is a peninsula, not an island, but sheer limestone walls cut it off from the Krabi mainland so completely that everything arrives by longtail boat from Ao Nang. Railay West is the sunset beach, a wide band of sand between jungle cliffs that made the area famous with rock climbers before beach travelers caught on. A ten-minute path leads to Phra Nang Beach, where a shrine cave sits at the base of a climbable karst and the shallow, clear water is the best casual swim in the province. Go in the morning before the day-trip boats arrive.

Phi Phi and Maya Bay: tour it right

The Phi Phi islands sit between Phuket and Krabi, and every hotel desk on either coast sells the same loop: Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Monkey Beach, and Bamboo Island. The difference between a great day and a floating traffic jam is timing, so book the earliest departure you can find or a sunrise tour from Ko Phi Phi Don itself. Maya Bay is a no-swim shore walk since its 2022 reopening, but Pileh Lagoon's enclosed turquoise pool and Bamboo Island's sandbars supply the swimming the famous cove no longer allows.

The far south: Ko Lipe and the Tarutao chain

Sunrise Beach runs powder-white along its eastern edge with snorkeling straight off the sand, and the surrounding park islands stay almost empty outside peak weeks. The catch is the commute: a ferry from Pak Bara on the mainland, or island-hopping boats down from Phuket and Lanta in high season. It rewards travelers with an extra two or three days, and the November-to-April window matters here more than anywhere on the coast.

The Gulf side: Samui, Pha Ngan, and Tao

The Gulf islands run on the opposite monsoon, which makes them the answer when the Andaman coast is rough from May through October. Ko Samui's Chaweng and Lamai are long, developed resort beaches with an airport twenty minutes away; Ko Pha Ngan splits between Haad Rin's full-moon party crowd and genuinely quiet northern coves like Bottle Beach; and Ko Tao is Thailand's dive-certification capital, with Sairee Beach as its social spine. Travelers who book Phuket or Phi Phi in September fight surf and storms that Ko Samui escapes, and Gulf visitors in November hit that coast's wettest weeks. Match the coast to your month before you pick the beach.

2. Expecting to swim at Maya Bay

The bay reopened in 2022 with visits capped and swimming banned to protect the recovering reef and resident blacktip sharks. Tours still deliver a spectacular shore walk, but the swimming happens at the other stops on the loop. Plan the day around Pileh Lagoon and Bamboo Island, with Maya Bay as the look-only headliner.

3. Treating Phuket as the whole story

Phuket has the airport, the resorts, and the nightlife, but its most famous beaches, Patong especially, are the country's most crowded. The best sand is a boat ride away: Railay and Phra Nang from Ao Nang, the Phi Phi islands offshore, or Freedom Beach hiding just south of Patong itself. Use Phuket as a gateway, not a verdict on Thai beaches.
