Can You Bring a Gaming Console on a Cruise?

Yes, but check the cabin TV. No line lists a console as prohibited, so you can pack one. Carnival says Nintendo and X-Box play units cannot be used with the stateroom TV because the connection ports are disabled.

The official word

Straight from the source

“Digital Cameras/Camcorders, DVDs/VCRs, USB sticks, iPods, Nintendo/X-Box Play Units cannot be used with the TV in the guest stateroom or suite as the connection ports are disabled”

Before you board

Three calls that matter

Consoles are not banned

No line we checked lists a gaming console among prohibited items. Handhelds and home consoles travel as ordinary personal electronics.

The cabin TV is locked

Carnival disables the connection ports on stateroom TVs, so a console cannot use the screen. A handheld console sidesteps the problem entirely.

Pack it in your carry-on

Consoles are valuables. Keep yours in the bag you carry aboard rather than the checked luggage handled by porters at the pier.

Sailing tip: a handheld with downloaded games beats fighting the cabin TV and paying for ship Wi-Fi. More in our cruise guides.

FAQ

Quick answers

Can you bring a gaming console on a cruise?
Yes. A console is not on the major prohibited items lists. Pack it in your carry-on as a valuable.
Can you connect a console to the cruise cabin TV?
Not on Carnival. Its policy says Nintendo and X-Box play units cannot be used with the stateroom TV because the connection ports are disabled.
Do other lines block console connections to stateroom TVs?
The other eight lines do not address it in the policies we reviewed. Ask your stateroom host rather than assuming the ports are open.
Can you play games online on a cruise?
Only with a ship internet package, and speeds at sea vary. Download games at home and play offline instead.
