Three calls that matter

Basic supplies are fine

Bandages, antiseptic, tape, and over the counter tablets are not named on any major prohibited list. Problems start with what you add to the kit.

Pull the sharps out

Pocket knives and similar blades stay banned even inside a medical kit. Remove them before you pack, because bags are screened at the terminal.

The ship has a clinic

Every ship carries a medical center for anything serious. Your kit covers blisters, headaches, and scrapes; the clinic handles the rest.

Sailing tip: a compact soft sided kit packs flat in a carry-on and opens faster at screening than a hard case. More in our cruise guides.

FAQ

Quick answers

Can you bring a first aid kit on a cruise?
Yes for basic supplies. Remove banned knives and illegal substances, and pack prescriptions separately with their labels.
Can you bring your own first aid kit on a cruise?
Yes. None of the nine major lines list a personal first aid kit as prohibited. Keep it in your carry-on rather than the bags porters take.
Can you pack a knife or scissors in a cruise first aid kit?
Leave pocket knives out. Banned sharps stay banned inside a medical kit, and carry-on bags are screened at the terminal.
Do medications in a first aid kit need labels?
Holland America prohibits medications without proper prescriptions. Keep prescription items in labeled containers and carry them with you, not in checked bags.
