Can You Bring a Clothes Steamer on a Cruise?

No, on every major line. Clothes steamers and irons are banned as fire hazards on all the big cruise lines and are confiscated at embarkation. Ship laundry, self-service launderette irons, or a wrinkle-release spray are the alternatives.

The official word

Straight from the source

“Items that generate heat, such as clothing irons and steamers, are not permitted on board due to fire safety.”

Before you board

Three calls that matter

It is pulled at the scanner

Every bag is X-rayed at embarkation. A steamer or iron is confiscated and held until the end of the cruise, you will not have it in your cabin.

Use the ship instead

Most ships offer valet pressing, and many have self-service launderettes with irons you can use safely.

Pack wrinkle-free

A wrinkle-release spray, hanging clothes in a steamy bathroom, or packing wrinkle-resistant fabrics all get you by without a steamer.

Sailing tip: a travel wrinkle-release spray is allowed and does the job. More packing help in our cruise guides.

FAQ

Quick answers

Can you bring a clothes steamer on a cruise?
No. Clothes steamers are prohibited as a fire hazard on every major cruise line and are confiscated at embarkation, then returned at the end of the cruise.
Why can’t you bring an iron or steamer on a cruise?
Irons and steamers generate high heat and are a leading cause of cabin fires, so cruise lines ban them and provide laundry and pressing services instead.
How do you get wrinkles out of clothes on a cruise?
Use the ship’s valet pressing or self-service launderette irons, hang clothes in a steamy bathroom, or pack a wrinkle-release spray, which is allowed.
Is a travel steamer allowed on any cruise line?
No. The ban covers all handheld and travel steamers as well as full-size irons across the major lines.
